A column chronicling events and conversations on the awards circuit.
So now, as they say, is crunch time as this column leads into the first weekend where 20,000-plus eligible Emmy voters (I am but one of them) have ballots if not in hand then at least on their laptop and can begin voting in the categories they are eligible to judge. All members get to weigh in on the program categories. Others, depending on their branch (I am in the Writers Branch and a former Governor there) also get to vote on their branch selections.
The ballots went live Thursday and of course have all the usual suspects and obvious front-runners to choose from. The sheer number of voters, and the overwhelming amount of content thrown at voters during the very long Emmy season that started six months ago, simply tends to favor the best-known and most-written-about programs. So as my colleague (and Deadline TV critic) Dominic Patten and I have been discussing on our weekly TV Talk podcast, the leading candidates are obvious.
In Drama Series it is HBO’s to lose thanks to the likes of Succession and The White Lotus, both big winners last year (Lotus has been re-catergorized from Limited Series to Drama Series much to the objection of its producers, one of whom told me they appealed the decision to no avail more than once). In Comedy Series, any newcomer has to face Apple TV+ juggernaut Ted Lasso in supposedly its third and final season after winning the past two years in a row. Then we have the stalwarts like Barry, Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Only Murders in the Building, etc., etc. Newcomers with lots of heat over the past year could break through into one of the eight spots like Netflix’s Wednesday, Apple TV+’s Shrinking (also from the Lasso

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor With too much television, viewing every piece of content that is up for consideration for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards nominations is impossible. With 163 drama series, 95 comedies, 51 limited or anthologies and 61 television movies, every TV-goer has their tastes. Variety staffers have come together to curate its own dream Primetime Emmys ballot, with voting set to close at 10 p.m. PT tonight. However, it should be noted — we love consistency, especially in TV land. With our selections, we want to continue to promote (and advocate) for the Television Academy to allow 10 nominees in the top series categories. In addition, we would love to see uniformity in the acting races (having some categories with five while others have eight doesn’t make much sense. With this large TV boom, more options should be available for the respective lineups.
Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic A movie, good, bad or indifferent, is always “about” something. But some movies are about more things than others, and as you watch “Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy,” Nancy Buirski’s rapt, incisive, and beautifully exploratory making-of-a-movie documentary, what comes into focus is that “Midnight Cowboy” was about so many things that audiences could sink into the film as if it were a piece of their own lives. The movie was about loneliness. It was about dreams, sunny yet broken. It was about gay male sexuality and the shock of really seeing it, for the first time, in a major motion picture. It was about the crush and alienation of New York City: the godless concrete carnival wasteland, which had never been captured onscreen with the telephoto authenticity it had here. The movie was also about the larger sexual revolution — what the scuzziness of “free love” really looked like, and the overlap between the homoerotic and hetero gaze. It was about money and poverty and class and how they could tear your soul apart. It was about how the war in Vietnam was tearing the soul of America apart. It was about a new kind of acting, built on the realism of Brando, that also went beyond it.

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor “George & Tammy” costume designer Mitchell Travers’ approach to any project is to start with rock solid foundation. “You get asked a billion questions every day, and because I shoot moves so quickly, I love to have that ready,” he says. Travers reunited with Jessica Chastain (the two previously worked on “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) for the intimate look at country singer Tammy Wynette. With a storyline that spanned three decades, Travers needed to know the answer to any costume questions thrown at him. “When Tammy needed a coat, in the script, it was about what coat did she grab? Was it short? Long? Fitted? Oversized? Embellished?”
Ryan Giggs' case was back in court ahead of a scheduled trial next month. The former Manchester United star did not attend the hearing at Manchester Crown Court on Thursday morning, as his attendance had been excused.
Fans will know him best for his recent role as deputy-headteacher, Joe Casey in BBC school drama Waterloo Road, but actor James Baxter has more than a few impressive acting credits under his belt. First shooting to fame in Emmerdale back in 2007, the young star quickly made a name for himself in the TV industry, as part of the Doland family in the long running ITV soap.
“Rob Schneider: Woke Up in America,” released on Fox Nation Sunday and takes viewers from their living rooms to a seat at Schneider’s sold-out comedy tour. From how the word “woman” is now controversial to why the government released UFO footage — from making a movie with Donald Trump to his own vasectomy saga — Schneider is giving his comedic take on how America got to this “mad” place.Writing jokes in the current political climate has to be approached “in a more gentle way,” the comedian noted, Monday, while agreeing there’s a market opportunity for somebody with courage, rather than fear.“I do think the really good comedians, the ones that I really respect, would go against the grain, and go against wherever the power is and wherever the power is being abused,” Schneider said. “I’m sure that if George Carlin was alive, they would say he’s a right-winger… for whatever authority is being abusive, you have to go after the power centers.”In the Fox Nation comedy special, Schneider also maneuvers his audience through the culture wars and his personal ones alike, including his take on COVID mask mandates and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI)-focused companies.“I knew this country was in trouble when I went to a bank and the guard at the bank was like: Excuse me, sir, you’re in a bank.

While professional football has always captivated American audiences with its gladiatorial drama and drive, it’s at heart a multi-billion-dollar enterprise, propelled by profits and ratings. But amateur football, especially at the high school level, is a galvanizing force for communities, both rural and urban. It brings hope and unity; it’s an escape and an outlet; and for some it’s a pathway out of poverty.

Michael Nordine author If his post-“Mad Men” career has taught us anything, it’s that Jon Hamm is a natural comic actor who happens to be great in dramatic roles rather than the other way around. At the risk of downplaying his exemplary work as Don Draper, the 52-year-old has seemed most in his element in the likes of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and especially last year’s criminally underseen “Confess, Fletch.” “Maggie Moore(s)” finds him somewhere in the middle of the comedy/drama spectrum as a small-town police chief investigating the murders of two women with the same name — an intriguing premise to be sure, but one that Hamm’s “Mad Men” co-star John Slattery, in his sophomore directorial effort, struggles to bring to a satisfying conclusion.
The Real Housewives of Orange County star Shannon Beador has made it clear her relationship with ex John Janssen is in the past.
Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor Jessica Chastain was a “mess” when she won the best actress Oscar for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” in 2022. Not from the barrage of congratulatory messages from friends and family, but her hair (Stephanie Ingram) and makeup (Linda Dowds) collaborators had also won the best makeup and hairstyling Oscar. Says Chastain, “It was so meaningful to me that they were recognized for their work.” Chastain, Dowds and Ingram first crossed paths in 2013 on “Mama,” and most recently on Showtime’s “George and Tammy,” the story of country singers George Jones (played by Michael Shannon) and Tammy Wynette (Chastain). Since then, the trio has become a tight unit with honesty and trust at the core of their collaboration, whether conceiving real-life transformations or subtle applications as part of their process.
