Emmerdale star Matthew Wolfenden was left trying to fight back his tears as he discussed his upcoming exit from the ITV soap for the first time. The actor has played David Metcalfe in the ITV soap for 17 years but he'll soon be saying goodbye to the Dales in a storyline that is currently being kept under lock and key.
But during his appearance on This Morning on Wednesday (September 6), Matthew did confirm that he won't be killed off but did become emotional as he discussed why he had decided to leave.
Speaking to hosts Holly Willoughby and Craig Doyle, the 43-year-old said: "I'm so nervous about leaving, two decades. It feels like the right time, the door is left open. They're not killing me off. I'm allowed to tell you that, I might be back, but we'll see."

Matthew started to choke back tears when he was reminded of his time in Emmerdale with a bunch of nostalgic clips. After, Craigasked Matthew: "Forget the work for a moment, I'd imagine just being in that family for that length of time, that's quite scary, leaving that. The familiarity of all that."
The star removed his glasses and wiped away a tear, before continuing: "Yes. Sorry. I'm still really emotional watching that." Craig handed Matthew a tissue and Holly said: "It's been a massive part of your life."
"It has been a massive part of my life. I'm just so grateful," he replied. "I met my wife on the show, had three kids, it's given me 18 years of an amazing job and it's giving me a family. So to leave it, it's been a big big part of my life. So to leave it ... it's been the most amazing 18 years."
