The much-loved Emmerdale character Bob Hope has been a resident of the Dales for over 20 years and in that time has been a part of the biggest storylines to hit the show. Even in the last week, Bob has been central to a storyline involving his discovery of Wendy and Liam's secretive affair and after a tense confrontation he is now fighting for his life in hospital. But off screen, the actor Tony Audenshaw, who plays Bob, has been through ups and downs of his own in both his professional and personal life.
From experiencing homelessness and sleeping rough as a youngster to tragically losing his wife to cancer, here is what we know about the man behind one of the most-loved Emmerdale characters. Sleeping Rough Not only has Tony been involved in storylines which are about homelessness, but he has also experienced it himself as a youngster. Back in the 1980s, Lancashire-born Tony was working at Thorpe Park and was forced to sleep in his car after he was unable to afford a BnB.
He told the Loose Women panel in 2019: "I used to work at Thorpe Park, the theme park, I use to be the Thorpe Park rangers and do the voices. Up North things are much cheaper. I came down here in the 80s, and it was £70 for a BNB.
If I was down for five nights I would sleep in the car, because I didn't have much money coming in. "I'd never do it two nights on the trot because you couldn't really function well. It was Monday in a B&B, Tuesday in the car - the things you saw in those car parks, torches in the window." He went onto add he felt the show dealt with the theme of homelessness subtly.Tragic Death In 2017, Tony tragically lost his wife to pancreatic cancer when she was just 43 after a 16-month battle with the disease.
