EastEnders legend Nigel is unrecognisable 25 years after shock soap exit

Legendary EastEnders character Nigel Bates was always one of Albert Square's fan-favourite stars, particularly during the 90s when actor Paul Bradley first joined the show. But now, 25 years following his unexpected exit from the long-standing London soap, new pictures of Paul show the actor appearing entirely different from the bumbling buffoon we all knew and loved.
A now 68 year old Paul still has his signature Nigel curly locks, the actor has aged gracefully during his time in the spotlight. Paul first joined the Walford hit in 1992 and continued in the much-loved role until 1998, when his character was given a 'happy ending'.
Loveable loser Nigel left East London to begin a new life with a newfound love Julie Haye (played by Karen Henthorn), with producers making sure to leave the door open for a potential future return.The character of Nigel joined the show as a best pal of established characters, brothers Grant (Ross Kemp) and Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), and following his mother's death, he became a lodger of late EastEnders veteran Dot Cotton (June Brown). Nigel - who worked in the town's video shop - and Albert Square hardman Grant enjoyed a 'bromance' of sorts, and Dot thought of him as the good son she never had - though this meant meant her own child Nick Cotton hated him.
His signature look consisted of flamboyant shirts and dark, unruly curly hair, with actor Paul describing him in Larry Jaffee's 1994 book 'Albert Square & Me: The Actors of EastEnders' as "harmless and amiable... I suppose he's a bit of a wallie." Paul added: "Nigel is very well-meaning.
