The region’s top cop confirmed that community police officers will be on the beat soon as the force welcomed 12 new recruits last week.
Chief superintendent John Cairns revealed that a dozen probationary constable started new roles, and says he will make good on a promise to councillors that “community police officers will return”.
The new recruits are a welcome boost following cuts in previous years, which have reportedly seen the police force reduced in capacity by around 14 per cent.
Mr Cairns attended the council’s latest police, fire and rescue sub-committee meeting and tabled a regional police force update report for the first six months of this year.
Councillor Tony Berretti asked: “How many active officers do we have, frontline and performing other duties? Are we, if I’m not mistaken, likely to see an influx of new trainee officers?”
Chief Supt Cairns responded: “An influx – I wish it was an influx. But yes, there will be 12 officers joining us.
“They’ve completed their training at Tulliallan. In terms of budgeted establishment, I’m running slightly under at the moment.
“I’ve had conversations with force executive members in relation to recruitment, retention, and such like. That dialogue is ongoing.
“Members will be aware that there is a pause on recruitment at the moment, which is being looked at at the highest levels, given the financial position and the difficult decisions that Police Scotland and other agencies are having to make.
“In terms of numbers deployable, that can be influenced clearly by annual leave, court, absences, and officers who may be on some form of modified duties or recuperating from injury.”
