Steven J. Horowitz Senior Music Writer Fresh off of a surprise appearance during Tyler, the Creator’s headlining Coachella set, Donald Glover has announced two new Childish Gambino albums, the second of which will be the final album released under that name. The actor and rapper revealed the pair of records during a conversation on his Instagram initiative, Gilga, on Sunday night (April 14).
He stated that the first album will be a finished version of his surprise release “3.15.20,” which quietly dropped in March 2020, under the original title “Atavista” along with a vinyl release. Then, he’ll follow with the last installment of the Gambino project, which will serve as the soundtrack to his film “Bando Storm and the New World.” “The project I put out, ‘3.15.20’ that no one’s ever heard of, people didn’t even know I put it out, it was originally titled ‘Atavista,’ it was supposed to be ‘Atavista,’” he said. “But we put it out quickly, I didn’t master or mix it, I just kind of put it out.
I was going through a lot, n—s thought everybody was going to die because it was the pandemic. We put it out, we finished it, it’s ‘Atavista,’ we’re putting that out. But then after that, there’s a Childish Gambino album, the final Childish Gambino album.” He continued by revealing that the final Gambino album will soundtrack his “Bando” movie, and that he was inspired by past soundtracks like Prince’s album for 1989’s “Batman,” and 1995’s “Batman Forever.” “3.15.20” was originally released at the start of the pandemic, serving as Gambino’s fourth studio album.
Outside of music, he recently starred in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” alongside Maya Erskine.
