For years, Los Angeles-based Hillsong Church had been a popular place of worship for celebrities, attracting the likes of Justin Bieber, Chris Pratt and Kendall Jenner — until now-disgraced pastor Carl Lentz was hit with multiple scandals, including the revelation of an affair, accusations of covering up child sexual abuse, and embezzling church funds.
FX’s “The Secrets of Hillsong”, a new four-episode investigative documentary series explores the rise and fall of the controversial church, featuring the first interviews with former pastors Carl and Laura Lentz since their ouster from the church, and based on the explosive original reporting by Vanity Fair journalists Alex French and Dan Adler.

Selome Hailu MGM+ has greenlit a docuseries titled “Hollywood Black” directed by Justin Simien, who executive produces alongside Forest Whitaker. In four parts, “Hollywood Black” focuses on the history of Black actors, writers, directors and producers who fought for their place in the entertainment industry. The series is based on the book of the same name by historian Donald Bogle. Simien is best known for writing and directing the 2014 film “Dear White People” and creating the Netflix series of the same name. He also directed and wrote 2020’s “Bad Hair,” and directed “Haunted Mansion,” the 2023 horror film based on the Disney theme park ride, which debuts later this year.

From working under Hype Williams on the set of the 1998 classic movie “Belly,” to directing music videos for hip-hop heavyweights like Kendrick Lamar and Drake, the visual artist — whose real name is Julien Christian Lutz — has been delivering outstanding visuals for three decades and counting. Today, Lutz’s production company Fela teams up with Insight Production in announcing the launch of a new series dubbed “Video Star.” The show will explore the behind-the-scenes process and cultural impact of the most groundbreaking, innovative music videos dating back to the ’70s. It will additionally spotlight videos of the ’90s (when seven-figure budgets were introduced) leading up to modern-day examples, including some of Director X’s own innovative creations.
“The Secrets of Hillsong” premieres Friday, May 19 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX with the first two episodes of the series, before the final two episodes air May 26. All episodes will stream the next day on Hulu.
