Eyesight problems such as short-sightedness are on the rise and research has predicted that there could be nearly 5 billion people with the condition by 2050 - that's nearly half of the world's population. A recent report from the World Health Organisation (WHO) pointed out that at least 2.2 billion people globally have a vision impairment – and around half of these could have been prevented.
According to ophthalmologist Dr Jørn Slot Jørgensen, of the Laser Eye Clinic London, the pandemic could be partly to blame for worsening eye problems, particularly the increase in short-sightedness. “With the shift to remote work, people are now more likely to spend extended hours with their screens for work and leisure,” he explained.
