The pressure on Scotland’s NHS was laid bare last night by an angry son who claims his mum was left “semi-naked” and soaked in her own urine in a bed in a hospital canteen.
Shocking images show 76-year-old Shakuntala Gupta lying on a bed next to the open door of the Hairmyres hospital dining area, where staff go for their meals.
The room appears to also be used as a storage area for bins, boxes and furniture.
When her son Shalabh Gupta challenged a nurse he claims he was told the hospital had to make way for an emergency.
He says his confused mum, who doesn’t know where she is, was left with “no privacy and no dignity”.
Shakuntala was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Hairmyres two weeks ago after a fall at home in East Kilbride, and was admitted for observation following diagnosis of a hairline fracture to her pelvis.
On Thursday Shalabh found her in a bed in the canteen. In his video footage, catering staff can be seen in the kitchen and moving around in the dining area where she lies as the only patient.
“She was just wearing an apron with a thin blanket over her and her legs were bare,” he said.
“She was in a semi-nude position and her legs were exposed. The door was open, there was a cold wind blowing through and visitors passing by. There was no curtain or screen.
“There was no privacy, no dignity. She had been in a room with a toilet. Then, all of a sudden, she was in a cafeteria. There were people sitting there in the cafe, nurses chatting at tables and chairs. You cannot put somebody there like that.”
Mrs Gupta is incontinent and has to be spoon fed. Due to her dementia, she frequently strips off her clothing, and her family say it was totally inappropriate to leave her in such a public place.
