Scotland’s Ukraine minister has told those who fled to the country after the Russian invasion “Scotland is your home for as long as you’re here” ahead of the festive period.
Neil Gray also thanked Scots who opened their homes to people from Ukraine after the February invasion. In a statement ahead of St Nicholas’ Day on Monday – an important celebration in the Ukrainian calendar, Mr Gray said: “I want to wish a very happy festive period to all the displaced people from Ukraine who are going to be celebrating across Scotland.
“We know how difficult it will be for people who are spending their first Christmas away from their home country and in some cases their loved ones. We want you to know that Scotland is your home for as long as you are here and we want to make sure that you all feel comfortable and supported in the communities you are living in."
Mr Gray, the SNP MSP for Airdrie and Shotts, added that he had been "incredibly heartened" by the welcome that Scottish people had given to Ukrainians who had arrived in the country following the Russian invasion in February. The Scottish Government launched a Super Sponsor Scheme to enable Ukrainians to travel to Scotland without needing a UK-based sponsor, but suspended the scheme in July after it was overwhelmed with demand.
Many Ukrainian refugees have also been moved around in recent months despite integrating with their new Scottish communities. Mr Gray added that work was ongoing to ensure Ukrainians were given long-term accommodation after spending months living out of hotels.
He has asked Scots with a bed to spare to consider registering on the Scottish Government's Warm Scottish Welcome website if they could give someone a place to stay. More than 7.5 million Ukrainians
