Davina McCall has discussed her first marriage to husband Matthew Robertson and revealed she was very unhappy. The television presenter, 55, has confessed that she only stayed married to him for 17 years for the sake of their children. It was only when her sister Caroline died that she looked again at her relationship with her husband and concluded that it wasn't working.
She'd decided to re-evaluate her own life after Caroline died of cancer and realised she was sweeping her unhappy marriage with Matthew under the carpet. It was then she decided they needed to work out what to do. In a new interview, Davina, who tied the knot with Matthew in 2000, shared that before their split, they 'never spoke' but 'never argued'.
Davina told The Times: "In the end, we were living completely separate lives. We were hardly talking. It wasn't arguing.
We never argued. We just lived separate lives. And we weren't happy.
'I thought, ''I just want to be happy, and this is really sad. We're in a marriage and we're in it for the kids. We love our kids, but we're just not happy.' And I thought, ''Is that really selfish?'' because my parents divorced and I thought that was so selfish." They attended therapy before definitively deciding to part ways but it ultimately didn't work.
Davina says: "We loved each other. But sometimes that isn't enough." The couple have three children, Holly, 21, Tilly, 19, and Chester, 16, together and split in November 2017. Now, Davina has moved on and has been dating hairdresser to the stars Michael Douglas for five years.
