Scottish actor David Tennant opened up the BAFTA awards with a gag about the film Saltburn and a dig at the US elections. Film stars including Cillian Murphy, Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper were some in attendance.
The Doctor Who star promised the 2024 film awards, which has been held in London on Sunday night, “is going to go smoother than Ken’s chest” before a hilarious gag on hit thriller comedy film Saltburn.
Looking out at the star-studded audience, he said: “Look at your in your tuxedos and fancy dresses, like the opening scenes of Saltburn. Let’s hope it doesn’t end up like the closing scenes of Saltburn.”
He continued: “Judging these awards is like picking a favourite child – difficult, not impossible, but difficult.” Meanwhile, Saltburn actor Richard E Grant has said that “a number of grandmothers” have complained about the film which contains explicit and sexual imagery.
Speaking to the PA news agency on the red carpet, he said: “A number of grandmothers have written in to complain saying that they were told to watch it as a family film before Christmas and their false teeth fell out. So it was a great response.”
"What can I say about Saltburn?, not very much because we are pre-watershed. One does a dance at the end whilst his clothes are in the wash but the song he danced to has become a viral sensation an incredible 22 years from when it was first released," David said before introducing Sophie Ellis-Bextor to sing a special performance to the hit song Murder on the Dancefloor.
Bafta host David Tennant also joked about the 2024 US presidential election, where Donald Trump and Joe Biden are expected to go head-to-head again in his opening monologue.
