David Ayer is looking back on one of his biggest movies, which wound up being one of his biggest disappointments – Suicide Squad.
The director tackled the 2016 movie, which starred the likes of Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Viola Davis and Cara Delevingne. Despite being a box office hit, it was largely panned by critics. David was not involved with the sequel, which premiered in 2021 and was directed by James Gunn.
During a recent interview, the director opened up about the experience, explaining how it “broke” him.

“Hollywood, I tell people, is like watching someone you love get f-cked by someone you hate,” he said during an appearance on the Real One’s podcast. “The big one is Suicide Squad. That shit broke me. That handed me my ass.”
He continued, explaining that he took the project after his hit Fury, which gave him the opportunity to do “anything.” David expressed hopes to create “this amazing, collaborative thing.”
That wasn’t what wound up happening, according to him. Why?
“And then Deadpool opened, right? And they never tested Batman v. Superman, so they were expecting a different result, and then they got hammered by all the critics,” he recalled. “Then it’s like, ‘Okay, we’re going to turn David Ayer’s dark, soulful movie into a fucking comedy now.’”
This isn’t the first time that David has blasted the final cut of him movie. He took aim at it back in 2021.
