Darius Campbell Danesh was “really excited” about an upcoming appearance on a Pop Idol reunion show, just weeks before his tragic death on August 11, according to reports. The 41 year old star, who first shot to fame on Pop Stars back in 2001 before winning the nation’s hearts with his appearance on Pop Idol, was rumoured to be appearing on a reunion special alongside fellow alumni Will Young and Gareth Gates.
However, tragically the singer was found dead in his US apartment last week, with his family confirming the sad news on social media on Tuesday evening. According to a source, Darius had appeared to be in “good spirits” and was his “happy usual self” prior to his death.
He was expected to make a return to the UK in just a few weeks time for the rumoured Pop Idol reunion special being made by Thames TV to mark the twentieth anniversary of the show, the source told The Sun. Plans for the reunion were even already underway with filming set to take place at the Criterion Theatre in London’s West End.
"He was really excited about the reunion and was in talks with producers to appear on it.They were looking at getting filming started around the end of September,” the friend told the outlet. “It was going to be an hour-and a-half-long special hosted by Ant and Dec and full of nostalgia for the millions of Pop Idol fans.
“I spoke to Darius recently and he was in good spirits — he was his usual happy self.” The source also revealed that the one-off special would include never-before-seen-footage from the iconic show, with Will and Gareth even reportedly being “lined up for a duet”.
