Former Old Trafford striker Danny Welbeck has told Evan Ferguson that he would come under “a bit more scrutiny” at Manchester United should he make a transfer and encouraged him to stay at Brighton.
The 18-year-old has scored seven times in 20 outings for the Seagulls since his breakthrough last season with all of his strikes coming this term. The attacker also netted his first goal for the Republic of Ireland in last month’s 3-2 win over Latvia in Euro 2024 qualifying.
His form this campaign has driven speculation about a potential summer move away from the South coast. United have been among the teams tentatively linked for Ferguson, although ex-academy Welbeck was careful about advising a move to Old Trafford.

When asked what advice he would give Ferguson about his future, as per the Sussex Express, he joked: "Go Real Madrid now!" before adding: "For young players coming through, this is an unbelievable environment [at Brighton] for them to grow and to learn as a player and person.
"I'd say at United, you come in and there's a bit more scrutiny. He can learn his game here and he can really improve himself as a player. You never know what lies in the future.
"I'm not saying what he should do. It's up to him. Everybody has got their own path, their own story and they write that themselves.”
Regarding Ferguson’s development, Welbeck said: "He's been training with us for well over a year now. He's very well adapted to the group. He's well integrated.
"When he's had his opportunities this season, he's flourished. He's still young and don't want to put too much pressure on his but he's doing fantastically.”
