Within 15 hours of a mean thief ransacking his home in Heaton Mersey, John Macaulay had CCTV of a suspect using his wife's stolen bank card at local shops - and a name for him. He was even able to tell police when the suspect was going to be in the chemist to collect his methadone.
Amongst things taken by the intruder were unopened presents for his son who was celebrating his second birthday the day of the break-in. Items of huge sentimental value were also taken, and a laptop.

GMP did attend John's home the day after the break-in to collect forensic evidence. But after John gathered evidence and traced the suspect's movements, he waited four days for them to make a move, regarding an arrest.
By that time John, 48, had contacted the Manchester Evening News, his local MP, the office of Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, and made a formal complaint to GMP.
The crime took place in May 2021. Now John and his family have been let down by the judicial system again. The suspect had admitted fraud in connection with the use of the stolen bank cards but denied burglary.
After more than a year a trial date was eventually fixed for November 2022 at Manchester Crown Court. But it was then put back to January 2024. Now John will never see justice - as the suspect has died.
