A one-year-old girl has tragically died after he dad accidentally ran her over with his SUV. Joseph Reddy Salibindla, 41, got into his car to go to the supermarket without realising little Rishwika had followed him out.
The girl was standing behind the vehicle when disaster struck in Edna avenue, Toongabbie, in Sydney’s northwest, just before 5.30pm on Friday. The 21-month-old was discovered covered in blood before emergency services were called to the scene, the Mirror reports.
Rishwika's dad tried to keep her alive until six ambulance crews arrived but the girl later died from her injuries. Mr Salibindla was later taken to Parramatta police station and assisted officers with their inquiries. No charges have been filed.
Following the tragedy, the girl's family told 9News they were "completely heartbroken" and that her mum is "inconsolable". They added: "It's every family's worst nightmare, but they come from a big church community and are supporting each other."
An investigation is underway and a report will be prepared for the coroner. Christine Erskine, the executive officer of Kidsafe New South Wales, said: "Something like this is very hard to recover from."
