Cristiano Ronaldo's old comments on his motivations have potentially shed light on his Manchester United future.
On Saturday a report in The Times claimed that Ronaldo had asked United to accept a bid for him should a 'reasonable' offer be received for his services. United have so far been adamant that Portuguese ace would not be leaving the club this summer.
Ronaldo ended the 2021/22 season as the club's leading goal-scorer, notching 24 goals in all competitions and he seemed to commit himself to staying at the club by backing the appointment of Erik ten Hag. Back in 2017, Ronaldo spoke about what motivates him as a footballer — and it perhaps points to where his future may lie.

He said after winning the Ballon D'Or for the fifth time: "I set my own goals. I strive to better myself and I always want to win.
"You have to fight for that, my motivation is still very much intact. When I wake up, I'm still motivated to get to training and that's the best thing in the world.
"Things can alter very quickly, to be honest, and the motivation may change. I'm not prepared for that yet though, and I don't want it to happen, but the day will come.
"I'm not thinking about it because I'm enjoying this fantastic moment, I feel great, motivated, and physically strong." It is worth noting that less than a year later Ronaldo would leave Real Madrid to join Juventus.
With United playing Europa League football next season, it is clear on the European stage that Ronaldo will not be able to achieve his own personal goals. The 37-year-old is now into the final year of his contract at the Theatre of Dreams after returning 12 months ago.
