An eerie video of an abandoned Scots hospital has surfaced, giving a rare glimpse into the decaying building that once housed hundreds of patients.
The footage shows keen explorers making their way through windows and rubble-filled rooms of Stobhill Hospital. Sat in the North of Glasgow, the building served for over 100 years until it was left to rot in 2011. A new hospital was built on the same grounds, though the abandoned structures still remain standing, Glasgow Live reports.
In the unearthed footage uploaded by Exploring with Alec, the group first crawls up from behind the old buildings, discovering a wooden board with a giant hole in it - their entrance to the structure. Once inside, we see much of the old equipment which has also been abandoned.
The hallways and rooms are dimly lit, with most of the windows now boarded up after numerous breaking and entering incidents. At what would’ve been the reception, the explorers discover old images and patient documents lying around.
The old buildings, which sit on the edge of Springburn Park, now hold a category B listing. The large clocktower which sits at the centre of the site has become a dominant landmark in the north of the city, since its construction in 1904.
When the hospital first opened, 200 of its beds were for psychiatric assessment. As the First World War broke out, the buildings were converted into two military hospitals - before it eventually became a Glasgow Corporation hospital in 1930.
Stobhill eventually transferred to the NHS, though despite extensions and upgrades the beds dropped below 1,000 by 1965. Closures began in the early 90s, with the maternity unit shutting down in 1992.
