Ex-Coronation Street actor Kevin Kennedy, 61, on his new stage show, playing bass with Johnny Marr, rock star dreams and alcohol addiction: ‘They sent me to rehab. That was a massive boost – it gave me a sense of self-worth. ’No, I get to do all the things on stage that I can’t do any more.
It’s an actor’s job to bring past experiences to a role if they can. There are certainly aspects of that with this character but it’s make-believe. What you see on the stage are pretty much the fun bits.
You don’t see the chaos that addiction can bring and quite rightly so, because Rock Of Ages isn’t that kind of show. It’s a hilarious night out from beginning to end, there’s no moral to it. It’s got scantily clad men and women, a very funny script and a cracking soundtrack of all the songs that you sing in the shower – those secret favourites.
I sing Can’t Fight This Feeling and there are classics in there like We Built This City and The Final Countdown. It’s loosely based on The Viper Room in Los Angeles. It’s a rock venue run by two reprobates.
One of them is my character, Dennis Dupree. The club is under threat from big business, who want to turn it into a shopping mall. Three love stories are entwined.
He’s a very charming, promiscuous, drug-taking hooligan. Nobody who comes through the club door is safe but when he’s sober and straight enough, he tries to help people get into the rock industry. I’ve got big hair, tight jeans and boots.
He’s great fun to play. They are polar opposites. Dennis will shaft you if he thinks he can get away with it, in all senses of the word.
Norman would be horrified at such behaviour. Although he did have his fair share of women – that’s pretty much the norm in a soap. Storylines demand it.

Marc Malkin Senior Film Awards, Events & Lifestyle Editor Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.” As you’ll read (and see in the video above), this week’s column is a little different this time around. I am running around the Beverly Center trying to find something to wear for my interview with actor Luke Macfarlane. It’s not often I think about my outfits because I’m classic and consistent — chinos, button-up shirt, bow tie and a pair of colorful sneakers. However, my time with Macfarlane is going to be different because my editor has convinced me not only to work out with him, but to do it on camera.
