Coronation Street legend Julie Goodyear MBE is suffering from dementia, her husband has revealed in a statement.The 81 year old actress played iconic Rovers Return barmaid Bet Lynch in the much-loved ITV soap from 1966 to her last appearance in 2003. Her husband Scott Brand announced the heartbreaking news on Wednesday, 7 June, to let Julie’s fans know why she may be confused if they meet her while she is out and about. He added that he hoped fans would understand.
Scott’s full statement read: “My darling wife and I have had to come to terms with this heart-breaking diagnosis. Unfortunately, Julie has been suffering forgetfulness for some time and we have been seeking medical advice and assistance, but we now know that there is no hope of a reversal in the situation – and that her condition will get progressively, and perhaps speedily, worse. “We have taken the decision to publicly announce the diagnosis as Julie still loves visiting friends and eating out.
Inevitably she is recognised, and fans love to meet her - and she them - but she can get confused particularly if she is tired. I hope people will understand.” Julie, who has been married to Scott since 2007, remains a patron of Willow Wood Hospice in Greater Manchester. She first appeared as Bet Lynch on Coronation Street in 1966 with a nine episode run before later becoming a familiar face in Weatherfield.
Bet’s towering beehive hairdo and love of leopard print put her among the soap’s most iconic characters. Julie went on to appear on the famous cobbles from 1970 to 1995 before returning for eight episodes in 2002 and a further seven in 2003. In 1996, she was awarded an MBE for her services to acting.
