Coronation Street icon Bill Roache has celebrated his 90th birthday today. Bill is renowned for being the longest-running soap actor, playing Ken Barlow on the ITV show since it first began in December 1960. In order to mark the impressive milestone, his family have released new portraits of the 90 year old taken by his son Will at their family home in Cheshire.
Speaking about the new photographs, Will said: “We had a lot of fun taking these shots. Get exclusive celebrity stories and reality tv news straight to your inbox with OK! daily newsletter . You can sign up at the top of the page.
“I think just having the family there made my father feel more relaxed which enabled me to capture his true vivacious personality and vibrant essence; the part of him that we are lucky enough to see every day, but is rarely seen publicly.” Bill admitted he was thrilled with the photographs that capture his warmth and the family man behind the soap character. “Will is really talented,” he said, “he studied photography when he was younger so he has a lot of technical knowledge but for me it was about how relaxed we all felt. “Will set everything up in the conservatory and we were all just chatting and laughing and he knew just when to capture the moment.
I can honestly say those are the best photographs I've ever had taken.” The new unseen images were also included in the re-release of Bill’s autobiography, ‘Life and Soul’ to mark his milestone birthday. Four years after the book was originally released, Bill wanted to reflect on the additional life lessons he had learned throughout the pandemic. He explained: “It was my children who first got me to write it four years ago.
