Controversial cuts proposed at two fire stations in Greater Manchester have been scrapped, with plans to increase cover in the city centre set to go ahead. Plans to stop manning Sale and Offerton stations at night were proposed as part of a review by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS).
As part of the plans, fire cover will increase at Manchester Central in response to the growing population and increase in high-rise buildings. Major changes to existing specialist rescue stations at Leigh and Ashton are also in the plans.
Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has now confirmed that the plans will go ahead, but the stations in Stockport and Trafford will continue to be manned 24-hours-a-day. It follows a backlash to the proposals in the summer.

The outcome of a public consultation on the plans was revealed at a Greater Manchester Combined Authority meeting today (September 29). Mr Burnham told council leaders at the meeting that the move means GMFRS will have another fire engines, taking the total number of pumps in the city-region to 51.
He said: "This is the first time in 15 years in Greater Manchester that a fire cover review has led to an increase. But that's right given that we are a growing city-region."
Mr Burnham also confirmed that GMFRS will invest £340,000 in prevention and protection activities. Specialist technical equipment will also be deployed.
He also revealed that the GMFRS will get 12 new fire pumps of the 'highest standard'. This means three-quarters of the fleet will be less than five years old.
