Plans for two courts for the new form of ‘padel’ tennis at an Altrincham golf club have been approved - despite the site’s green belt status and concerns over the effects of floodlighting on the bat population. Trafford’s planning committee gave the go-ahead to the new courts at Dunham Forest Golf Club in the face of objections from six neighbouring residents and two of its councillors.
Councillors were told the site is dedicated green belt and is in the Devisdale Conservation Area. The application also includes fencing around the courts and eight floodlights. A report to the committee said: “The application is considered inappropriate development within the green belt, as it cannot be said to preserve the openness of the green belt.
“The applicant has put forward a number of ‘very special circumstances’, some of which the council has accepted. Furthermore, the proposal is considered to result in ‘less than substantial’ harm to the significance of the designated heritage asset which would be outweighed by public benefit.”

It said that the proposal was considered to be acceptable ‘in regard to design, residential amenity, highways and parking and ecology impacts’. However, two councillors, Dan Jerome and Meena Minnis, were opposed to the plan.
In the report to the committee, Greater Manchester Ecology Unit also flagged up concerns over the light proposals and their effects on the bats. “The row of mature poplar trees adjacent to the planned development is likely to be used by foraging bats and the lighting contours supplied indicate that bats will be deterred from using this area when the floodlights are in use,” they said.
