A cleaning expert has revealed exactly how often we should be washing our bath mats - as a third of us admit to only cleaning them two times a year. With autumn in full swing, it's the perfect excuse for Brits to add some seasonal touches to their homes.
This includes our bathrooms, with novelty bath mats - from pumpkin-shaped to bobble-patterned - proving to be popular accessories. But luxury bathroom specialist Rikki Fothergil, from retailer Big Bathroom Shop, is warning people to give the soft furnishings a proper, regular clean.
If not, bath mats could make an otherwise well-maintained bathroom rather unhygienic. Rikki explained: “Bathrooms are no longer just a place of functionality, they're a space people are paying more attention to when adding personal touches as they look to create their ideal sanctuary.

"Bath mats are definitely on the rise as a stand-out feature that are used to inject colour and fun into a space- with novelty prints, tactile materials and intriguing shapes just some of the unique ways to make the trend your own."
Firstly, Rikki revealed how often we should wash our bath mats to keep them looking and smelling fresh. She recommends washing the accessory once a week - but quieter households could get away with twice a week instead.
She explained: "I’d always say to base how frequently you clean an item like this on your specific household and usage. While once a week is recommended, if you live alone or in a quiet footfall household two weeks should be enough."
