Social Security Scotland recently announced that an estimated 400,000 people will start to receive this year’s Winter Heating Payment from the middle of December, with the ‘vast majority’ of eligible households receiving the money by the end of January 2024. The payment of £55.05 will be made automatically to help people with higher energy costs during the colder months.
The majority of people eligible for Winter Heating Payment during the qualifying week of November 6-12, will receive it automatically, with no need to apply. It is paid through Social Security Scotland and people will receive a letter to let them know they are eligible before the payment is made.
However, people can check if they are eligible for the payment using the new ‘Winter Heating Payment checker’ on mygov.scot. It’s important to be aware the checker can only assess your eligibility for the winter 2023/24 payment.
Social Security Scotland said more than £22 million will be paid out this winter to people on a low income ‘in batches throughout the winter months’. Payments will appear on bank statements as 'WHP' - Winter Heating Payment.
The checker will ask you questions about:
It will also ask you about your circumstances from November 6 to 12, 2023 to check if you were eligible during the qualifying week. You can use the online checker here.
The Winter Heating Payment is only available in Scotland and replaced the £25 Cold Weather Payment delivered by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) last year. Unlike the DWP benefit, it is not dependent on a sustained period of cold weather in a specific location but is an annual, one-off payment made no matter the temperature.
Full details about the payment can be found on the mygov.scot website here.
