The latest Council Tax Reduction figures show that in March 2022, the scheme supported 462,670 households across Scotland, compared to 496,580 in March 2021. The total weekly income written off by local authorities was £6.829 million, compared to £7.328 million for the same period last year.
The total number of people getting a Council Tax Reduction decreased over the course of 2021-22 with the largest decrease of 1.7 per cent observed in January, 2022 compared to the previous month. February, 2022 saw the lowest level of Council Tax Reduction recipients ever recorded, with numbers rising slightly to 462,670 in March 2022.
However, many people may simply not be aware that they qualify for a discount, reduction, or exemption, on their Council Tax - whatever band they are in - which could save them hundreds of pounds this year, which could be an invaluable boost during the cost of living crisis.
As the cost of living continues to put pressure on millions of household budgets and inflation keeps rising, if your circumstances have changes since the 2022/23 Council Tax bills were issued in April, you may be due a discount - or even be exempt from paying.
Below is our quick guide on how to check your Council Tax bill and find out if you may be paying too much - before your next payment is due.
How much Council Tax you pay depends on your local authority, which sets an overall amount each year and assigns a ‘band’ to your home, based on its value - it’s isn’t banded by its current market value, but what it was worth on April 1, 1991 - the date Council Tax was introduced.
Council Tax bands range from A to H. A is the lowest band with the lowest charges and H has the highest charges.
Band A - Up to £27,000
Band B - Over £27,000
