‘Captain America: New World Order’ to Test Sam Wilson’s Values in Paranoid Thriller (Exclusive)

Jem Aswad Senior Music Editor Back in the day (“the day” being the 1990s), Pavement became so typecast as a cliché-lambasting, anti-rock band that they never really got credit for what a great rock band they were — and, as their ongoing 30th-ish anniversary tour shows, still are. The stereotypical scrawny, bookish, indie vibe and image of the group’s early records had become so cemented that few seemed to notice how tight and accomplished they became after drummer Steve West joined the group in 1993. Although they always downplayed their ability to “rock out” and still do, when the band locks in on hypnotic grooves while singer-guitarist Stephen Malkmus plays solos with a Lou Reed-ish combination of soaring melodies and brittle squall (usually finishing with some self-mocking gesture), they can hold their own with virtually any rock band. On their later albums, that seasoning carried over to their songwriting, as Malkmus’ almost run-on melodies were delivered in a cleaner, sharper manner, as if he were no longer quite so embarrassed by how pretty or catchy they can be.

Manori Ravindran International Editor Utopia has acquired worldwide rights to a feature documentary about Hollywood’s voracious autograph hunters. “Hollywood Signs, which will receive a Sept. 27 digital release in the U.S., explores the unique and often hilarious relationship between Hollywood celebrities and their fans through the lens of the autograph collecting subculture. Some of the celebrities featured in “Hollywood Signs” include Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead franchise), Dan Fogler (“Fantastic Beasts”), Rachel True (“The Craft”), Eric Roberts (“The Dark Knight”), Eliza Roberts (“Animal House”), Tom Wopat (“The Dukes of Hazzard”) and Karan Ashley (“Power Rangers”), among others.

Swedish House Mafia have debuted a new collaboration with Alicia Keys at a recent show in San Francisco.The producer trio — who were playing in the city as part of their ‘Paradise Again’ tour — enlisted Keys on stage, where she performed the as-yet unreleased song ‘Finally’. The track itself is a cover of the Kings of Tomorrow song of the same name, which featured the singer Julie McKnight.For their part, Swedish House Mafia and Keys bring an atmospheric touch to the 2000 original, pairing the singer’s R&B vocals with the trio’s trademark build-ups and bass drops.

A coming-of-age family drama “La Piel Pulpo” turns on twins Iris and Ariel who live with their mother and younger sister on a remote island. Having grown up in this rarified environment with only the mollusks, birds and reptiles for company, the teens are inseparable and have formed a near transcendental connection with nature. Curious about the world beyond their island, Iris hitches a boat ride with a rare visitor to explore the mainland and search for their estranged father. The act of physically separating from her twin brother puts a strain on their relationship.

Holly Jones On the heels of a world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival and ahead of its bow in New Directors competition at San Sebastian, BFF, who heads international sales, has given Variety exclusive access to the trailer for Nicaraguan director Laura Baumeister’s debut feature, “Daughter of Rage.” The film follows 11-year-old María and her mother, Lilibeth, who navigate poverty by collecting and repurposing refuse from the local landfill. A look at stifling generational debt passed on in communities that work hard to stay afloat, the film also tackles precocious familial bonds, abandonment, and the salvation of an imagination that allows the protagonist to cope with uncertainty.

Zack Sharf Disney and Marvel Studios announced at the D23 Expo that “Unorthodox” Emmy nominee Shira Haas is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the superhero Sabra in the upcoming fourth “Captain America” movie, officially titled “Captain America: New World Order.” In the comics, Sabra is a mutant who serves as a Mossad agent. The character’s inclusion in the comics has long generated controversy, but Marvel confirmed to Variety that it’s taking a “new approach” with Sabra for the big screen. “While our characters and stories are inspired by the comics,” the studio said in a statement to Variety, “they are always freshly imagined for the screen and today’s audience, and the filmmakers are taking a new approach with the character Sabra who was first introduced in the comics over 40 years ago.”

Shira Haas and Tim Blake Nelson have joined Marvel’s Captain America: New World Order starring Anthony Mackie, who is set to reprise his role as Sam Wilson. Carl Lumbly, who appeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series, is also set to reprise his role as Isaiah Bradley.

Marvel project from Uncharted director Amy Hennig’s new studio Skydance New Media has finally been revealed.The first look trailer was shown at yesterday’s (September 9) Disney and Marvel Games Showcase with the untitled project set to feature both Black Panther and Captain America.The game will be set during World War 2 and the action looks set to be split between Europe and Wakanda. The “narrative-driven, ensemble adventure” will have players controlling an ensemble of four characters including a young Steve Rogers, aka Captain America and Azzuri, T’Challa’s grandfather and the WWII-era Black Panther.

Brent Lang Executive Editor New Slate Ventures has come on board as a production partner for Insignia Films’ “Free Money.” The announcement was made just ahead of the documentary feature’s world premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. Jordan Fudge, Jeremy Allen and Tess Cohen will join producer Amanda Pollak, and executive producers Stephen Ives, Bradwel Iro (LBX Africa), Chris Buck (Retro Report) to back the film.  The film explores what happens when universal basic income (UBI) comes to the Kenyan village of Kogutu. GiveDirectly, a non-profit organization, is sending free money for 12 years as part of an experiment. Filmmakers Lauren DeFilippo and Sam Soko juxtapose the story of these young economists, bankrolled by Silicon Valley and convinced that they have found an infallible algorithm to improve lives, with those of the villagers.
