After six years on our screens as nurse Lucille Robinson, Call the Midwife star Leonie Elliot has reportedly left the show to embark on new projects. The much-loved midwife has been a staple of Sunday night viewing in recent years, as she delighted fans with her warm personality and caring ways. However fans haven’t seen her on screen since the second episode of the current series, when it was revealed that Lucille was suffering from severe depression and had made the decision to leave the streets of Poplar to return home to Jamaica. The devastating bout of depression followed Lucille’s miscarriage and was also set against the backdrop of Enoch Powell’s infamous “rivers of blood” speech which highlighted the growing racial tensions of the time period.
However, despite leaving London, many fans had hoped the exit was only temporary and that Lucille would soon be back once she had recovered - something which the Mirror reports is not the case and that her exit will now be permanent. OK! have contacted Leonie's representatives and the BBC for comment. “Please make Lucille happy again.
Don’t let them leave. I think she is lovely,” pleaded one fan. “Not Lucille! She was my favourite.
Please don’t separate her and Cyril!” Argued another. Actress Leonie said after her final scene aired last month: “This season was incredibly difficult to film.Thank you for all your kind words... Look after yourselves and each other.” Despite Leonie’s exit from the show, her co-star Zephryn Taitte will be returning next series as Lucille’s husband Cyril in which the engineer takes on volunteer work at a homeless shelter.
