Bucks Fizz star Jay Aston has shared how she "willed" her teenage daughter Josie to "make it" as she lay in a hospital bed fighting bacterial meningitis. The 60 year old singer's daughter was rushed to hospital and put into intensive care before being put into an induced after her organs began to fail following her diagnosis. Now, nearly a month later, the 18 year old is recovering in a specialist kidney unit and has been told she will be "permanently scarred". "It’s been absolutely devastating.
We were told it was 50/50 whether she would pull through. We still don’t know when she’ll be coming home," Jay explained to the Mirror. I couldn’t believe this was her fate, because she’s such a lovely person. She’s outgoing, kind, good-willed and full of life. It just felt so cruel.
“I’ve been doing a lot of praying. She’s my world – we’re ridiculously close. I just couldn’t imagine being without her.” Josie's first symptoms began on 22 March, when she phoned her mum to share how unwell she was feeling and when her mum arrived to see her in Kent, she had been shaking.
Initially, Jay thought it could have been heatstroke, but she recalled how days before her daughter had complained about aches in her joints. Josie then developed a headache, neck pain and temperature, which were not relieved by pain killers. She swiftly called 111 for an ambulance, but it didn't come.
“That was 6.45 pm, but the ambulance didn’t come. Her temperature reached almost 40. I started to get really worried.
