Lempicka, the much-anticipated but cooly received musical directed by Hadestown‘s Rachel Chavkin, will play its final performance on Sunday, May 19, producers announced tonight, just a month after opening.
In a statement, producers Seaview and Jenny Niederhoffer said, “We are so proud of our production and the family of artists and artisans who’ve shaped it. Few knew better than Tamara de Lempicka that art isn’t easy but always worth the effort.”
The musical received three Tony nominations on Tuesday, including two for the performances of Eden Espinosa (leading actress in a musical) and Amber Iman (featured actress in a musical). A third nod went to Riccardo Hernández and Peter Nigrini for their scenic design. The hoped-for nomination for Best Musical didn’t happen.
Lempicka chronicles the life of the 20th Century painter Tamara de Lempicka, played by Espinosa. Iman portrayed the artist’s muse and lover Rafaela.
Opening to mixed-to-negative reviews, Lempicka has been struggling at the box office. Last week, the show grossed just $288,102, with just 71% of seats filled at the Longacre Theatre.
The $19.5 million musical, which began previews March 19 and opened April 14, was written by Carson Kreitzer and Matt Gould. The show was one of a dozen productions that opened during Broadway‘s unusually busy and competitive April.
Last week, producers of satirical revue Forbidden Broadway on Broadway, announced that a scheduled summer opening at the Hayes Theatre has been postponed due to an “enormously crowded” landscape.
