A dad is feared dead after he was swept away whilst attempting to save his teenage son on holiday.
According to his 15-year-old son, the 49-year-old British man disappeared beneath the waves during the incident at Pomponette lagoon in Mauritius last Saturday morning. A search was launched in the waters surrounding the tropical island.
As of Monday afternoon, the dad had not been found, sparking fears he has died. A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said they were "supporting the family" of British man who had died in Mauritius and were currently "in contact with the local authorities."
The tragedy struck only one day after the man, his partner and his son arrived in Mauritius last Friday, reports The Mirror. They had been due to leave on March 30.
A huge search and rescue operation began shortly after 10.15am on Saturday shortly after the pair got into difficulty, with the national coast guard and a police helicopter dispatched to the scene.
Weather forecasts showed a large storm approaching Mauritius over the weekend, resulting in larger than usual waves in the area. One local weather agency had advised of strong winds and possible three-metre waves on Friday, and a strong swell warning was in force from Sunday into Monday.
It comes after an elderly British tourist reportedly died in front of his wife after being swept away in the sea off Goa, India on Friday. The woman and her husband, who had been holidaying in the area, both got into trouble and alerted some nearby jet skis off the coast of Talpona beach.
