With the cost of living crisis and industrial disputes across numerous sectors including doctors, nurses and railway workers, 2023 has been a hard year for many families in Britain. And while times are undoubtedly tough, one terrible winter 45 years ago was so notorious it has gone down in history as the 'Winter of Discontent'.
Between November 1978 and February 1979, a period of widespread strikes saw the country grind to a halt with massive queues at the petrol stations. Demands for pay raises by private, and later public sector workers, saw trade unions clash with Prime Minister James Callaghan and his Labour government.
Strike action by factory workers, lorry drivers, dustmen and even gravediggers caused massive public inconvenience and anger. Rubbish piled in the streets, the dead were left unburied, petrol stations closed due to the lack of supply by striking tanker drivers, and all this was exacerbated by the coldest winter in 16-years.
M.E.N's chief reporter, Neal Kealing, lived through the Winter of Discontent as a teenager. Back in 2021, he wrote: "I had already lived through power cuts, and a three-day working week earlier in the 1970s.
"By the time I was 19, in 1978, disputes in industry and the public sector were commonplace. Britain could be a dispiriting experience. The dole for many and struggling town centres were a reality, plus the spectacle of football hooliganism.
"No wonder we witnessed the garish rise of Glam Rock as an escape from the decaying manufacturing might of Britain, low wages, and snappy industrial relations. This was followed by the rage of punk rock.
