Jordan Moreau It’s off to the races for Sony’s video game adaptation “Gran Turismo,” which opens in theaters this weekend. The racing drama, starring Archie Madekwe, David Harbour and Orlando Bloom, made $1.4 million in Thursday previews at the box office. The film is expected to open between $10 million and $12 million this weekend.
It carries a $60 million budget, and on top of that, “Barbie” and “Blue Beetle” are hot on its heels, so it might be tough for “Gran Turismo” to take a victory lap. Based on the popular PlayStation racing video games of the same name, “Gran Turismo” is directed by Neill Blomkamp (“District 9,” “Elysium,” “Chappie”) and based on the real life story of Jann Mardenborough, a young gamer turned professional race car driver. Mardenborough, played by Madekwe (“Midsommar,” “See”) in the movie, was so good at the “Gran Turismo” racing simulation games that he took his skills to the actual race course and went pro.
Harbour (“Stranger Things,” “Black Widow”) plays Jack Salter, Mardenborough’s trainer, and Bloom (“The Lord of the Rings,” “Pirates of the Caribbean”) plays Danny Moore, a marketing executive at Nissan. “Gran Turismo” is the latest PlayStation video game to get the big screen treatment, following last year’s Tom Holland-led adaptation of “Uncharted,” a globe-trotting adventure movie also starring Mark Wahlberg. PlayStation also made a splash this year with HBO’s hit adaptation of “The Last of Us” and Peacock’s “Twisted Metal” series.
Warner Bros.’ DC superhero film “Blue Beetle,” last weekend’s No. 1 film that dethroned “Barbie,” is projected to earn between $8.5 million and $10 million, which would be about a 60% drop from its $25 million opening. However, “Gran Turismo” and “Blue

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief “Oppenheimer” landed on top of the mainland China cinema box office with an impressive score for a Hollywood movie in the current climate. More typically, gaming adaptation “Gran Turismo” failed to get far off the start line. While most films open in China on Fridays, Christopher Nolan’s nuclear opus was given a wide release from Wednesday. It scored $21.3 million (RMB154 million) over the conventional Friday to Sunday weekend and $30.7 million (RMB221 million) over its opening five days, according to data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway.
Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Denzel Washington’s bloody assassin-thriller “The Equalizer 3” debuted at the top of box office charts with $34.5 million over the weekend and an estimated $41 million through Monday’s Labor Day holiday. It’s the second-biggest Labor Day opening weekend in modern times, though the holiday isn’t known for bringing people to the movies. After the record-holder Marvel’s 2021 blockbuster “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” ($75 million for the three days, $94.6 million through Monday), the next highest-grossing Labor Day debut is Rob Zombie’s 2007 “Halloween” remake ($26 million for the three days, $30 million through Monday).
Variety said the receipts were boosted by showtimes in premium large format auditoriums, and the flick is on track for the second-highest Labor Day weekend opening in historyThe Post praised the movie stating that unlike the first two “dark” and “pathologically unpleasant” films, the third “lives up to the ever-deepening talent of its leading man.”The summer’s biggest blockbuster, “Barbie,” continued to pull in audience, netting $2.5 million Friday.
J. Kim Murphy Denzel Washington’s “The Equalizer 3” is showing some box office virtuosity, taking flight in its domestic debut after grossing $13.1 million on opening day from 3,241 venues. That includes $3.8 million in Thursday previews, boosted by showtimes in premium large format auditoriums.
Antoine Fuqua’s The Equalizer 3 will not let this summer go out quietly in what’s expected to be a $30M-$40M 4-day opening weekend; poised to be the second-best ever for the holiday after Shang-Chi ($94.6M). Last night from showtimes that began at 3PM, the Sony threequel clocked $3.8M at 3,241 locations.
Jordan Moreau Denzel Washington is back as professional killer Robert McCall in “The Equalizer 3,” which has made $3.8 million in previews at the box office. The R-rated, action thriller is expected to make between $28 million and $30 million in its opening weekend. With the Labor Day holiday on Monday, it could grow from $33 million to $40 million in the four-day frame.
Barbie is no longer holding the box office crown.
The box office results are in and Sony’s racing movie “Gran Turismo” won the weekend over “Barbie”, after all.
Brent Lang Executive Editor “Barbie” and “Gran Turismo” are both claiming victory at the box office in a showdown that has a lot to do with movie accounting and shifting definitions of the meaning of an opening weekend. Warner Bros., which backed “Barbie,” is claiming that the film won the weekend for the fifth time, earning $15.1 million over last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. However, Sony, which produced “Gran Turismo,” is claiming that its film topped box office charts with $17.4 million.
Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief Chinese crime action film “No More Bets” headed the mainland China box office for the fourth consecutive weekend, cementing its place as one of the biggest films in the world this year. Between Friday and Sunday, it earned $33.5 million (RMB241 million), according to data from specialist consultancy firm Artisan Gateway. Global data provider Comscore ranked that as the third highest performance of the weekend anywhere in the world, narrowly behind “Barbie’s” $35.3 million. The latest increment advanced “No More Bets’” cumulative score to $469 million (RMB3.37 billion). “Papa,” a comedy about parental efforts to improve their son’s education, held an unchanged second place in its second week.
Brent Lang Executive Editor It’s a nail-biter at the box office. Sony’s “Gran Turismo” is projected to narrowly outrace the competition with $17.3 million at the box office. But “Barbie” is close behind with $17.1 million, so it’s possible that when the final tally is revealed, the summer blockbuster will have reclaimed its crown and “Gran Turismo” will have the settle for second place.
according to IMDB’s Box Office Mojo. The flick, which CNN said “moves, ironically, too slow to deliver as a big-screen attraction,” tells the true story of Jann Mardenborough, a teenage Gran Turismo player who became a professional race car driver. “Barbie,” which is now officially the highest-grossing movie of the year in North America, remained in second place, with $4 million in sales. She beat out “Blue Beetle,” which earned $2.6 million and landed in third place. The DC Comics film, which was in the No.
J. Kim Murphy The summer box office wind-down is in action as Columbia Pictures’ “Gran Turismo” looks to outrun a slew of holdovers. The racing feature got off to a head start with an $8.5 million opening day from 3,856 screens, a figure that includes a sizable $5.3 million from preview screenings over recent weeks.
“You’re not actually going to allow them to do that, are you?”
Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Sony’s racing drama “Gran Turismo” is driving to a soft $10 million to $12 million in its first weekend of release. The film lands in 3,800 North American theaters on Friday and will compete with last weekend’s champion “Blue Beetle” for second place on domestic charts behind “Barbie.” Greta Gerwig’s box office behemoth is expected to return to the No. 1 spot in its sixth weekend of release, with projections of $12 million to $14 million between Friday and Sunday.
In the midst of a weekend with National Cinema Day, in addition to several previews, Sony’s feature take of PlayStation game, Gran Turismo, is bound to take No. 1 at the box office. This despite the fact that tracking has lowered its projections on the film down to $12M from $15M.
according to IMDB’s Box Office Mojo. The Post called the superhero movie — which stars Xolo Maridueña of “Cobra Kai” fame — “refreshingly spry.”The Ángel Manuel Soto-directed film is on track to rake in $25 to $27 million in North America this weekend alone, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It has already made history by being the first live-action superhero film centered around a Latino protagonist. It managed to beat out “Barbie,” who reigned at the box office for the four Fridays since its opening on July 21. It landed in second place with $6.2 million in sales. The fantasy comedy will be available to stream at home on Sept.
Even though kids are heading back to school, the summer box office isn’t giving up yet, and there’s a chance we could near $4 billion thanks to the final act power of Barbie and Oppenheimer. Warner Bros is hoping the first Latino superhero movie, Blue Beetle, will stoke its core moviegoers; that DC title seeing $3.3M last night in previews that began at 2PM from 3,400 locations, while Universal is looking to give guys something to laugh at after Oppenheimer with the R-rated bawdy doggie comedy, Strays, grossing $1.1M from showtimes that began at 5PM at 2,700 theaters.
Jordan Moreau “Barbie” has reigned over the box office with a historic, hot-pink theatrical run over the past four weeks, but now it’s facing its biggest challenge yet: DC’s latest superhero film, “Blue Beetle.” The comic book film, led by “Cobra Kai” star Xolo Maridueña, picked up $3.3 million in Thursday previews at the domestic box office. It’ll be a close box office battle between “Barbie” and “Blue Beetle” (both from Warner Bros.), but the latter is tipped to come out on top in its opening weekend. “Blue Beetle” is projected to make between $25 million to $32 million this weekend, while “Barbie” is poised to add $17 million to $20 million in its fifth week.
