Jason Blum’s Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster, the two preeminent production companies working in horror, have completed their long awaited merger, Blum announced on Tuesday.
“Our deal is …. Done. @blumhouse and #AtomicMonster have officially joined forces,” the producer wrote on X, in a message accompanied by a reel showcasing both companies’ libraries. “The preeminent homes for horror are now under one roof.”
The merger news comes just ahead of release of Night Swim, the supernatural horror pic marking the feature directorial debut of Bryce McGuire, which is produced by both companies. Starring Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon, the film hits theaters via Universal Pictures on January 5th. Previously teaming on last year’s horror hit M3GAN, the companies were first reported as being in advanced talks to merge in November 2022.
Under the merger, the companies will continue to operate as separate labels, with each maintaining its own creative autonomy and brand identity. The alliance is expected to increase their combined output, with Atomic Monster to utilize Blumhouse’s existing infrastructure to scale its activities across film, TV and new content areas including games, live experiences and audio. Going forward, Atomic Monster will also benefit from the first-look deal with Universal Pictures that Blumhouse is currently under, having come to the conclusion of its own deal with Warner Bros.
Blumhouse is known on the film side for horror franchises like Paranormal Activity, The Purge, Halloween, The Exorcist and The Black Phone, among many others. Atomic Monster, meanwhile, is famous for work on film series like The Conjuring, Insidious and Saw. The companies have collectively grossed over $11.6B worldwide since

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic If Ann Landers had it right, and hanging on to resentment amounts to letting someone you despise live rent-free in your head, then “Your Monster” is what happens when you kick open the door and let those feelings run amok. Drawing from personal experience, writer-director Caroline Lindy delivers a clumsy metaphor of a movie, in which a promising young actor named Laura Franco (“In the Heights” star Melissa Barrera) has her Broadway dreams derailed by a cancer diagnosis, only to discover a ferocious inner strength, courtesy of the beastly creature she finds hanging around her childhood home.
More tweaking to this year’s film schedule continues with Blumhouse/Universal‘s James McAvoy thriller, Speak No Evil, going from Aug. 9 to Sept. 13, where an untitled Blumhouse movie already has dibs.
In the wake of the dual strikes, the 2024 theatrical release schedule is in a bind, even streamers are desperate for product. Sundance, save us.
