‘The Adults’ Review: Dustin Guy Defa’s Indie Drama About Siblings Experiencing Grief And Reconnection – Tribeca Festival

Complicated sibling relationships are the basis of Dustin Guy Defa’s new film The Adults. The film depicts the emotional journey of three siblings played by Michael Cera, Hannah Gross, and Sophia Lillis, reuniting in their Mother’s death, a scenario that, while rife with potential conflict, also presents an opportunity for reconnection, understanding, and healing. As Defa portrays, such a reunion can cause the distance that has grown between siblings over time to become painfully real.

‘Blood for Dust’ Review: ‘Breaking Bad’ Meets ‘Fargo’ in Rod Blackhurst’s Montana-Set Drug Smuggling Thriller

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic A slow-burn Rocky Mountain noir set along the corridor between Billings, Mont., and the Canadian border — a cold, lonely stretch of highway shared by salesmen and smugglers alike — “Blood for Dust” establishes a ruthless sense of sangfroid from its opening shot. On a desk in a bland business office sits a family portrait, depicting a proud Marine and his family. Without warning, a shotgun goes off, splattering the photo and the wall behind it in blood and brain matter. The camera pulls back to reveal the same man, his face half-missing, a briefcase full of cash propped open on his desk. It’s a jarring — and jarringly artificial — scene. Fortunately, it’s the only one that rings false in director Rod Blackhurst’s otherwise tense, no-nonsense thriller, a standout of the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival that merits comparison to “Breaking Bad” or “Hell or High Water,” but with snow instead of sand. Moments after that opening gun blast, “Game of Thrones” star Kit Harrington (sporting a sleazy handlebar mustache) and Scoot McNairy (as his hangdog accomplice) show up, too late to save the friend who offed himself. In taking his own life, the dead man saved theirs. The question that lingers is how long their luck may last.

‘Eric Larue’ Review: Michael Shannon’s Powerful Directorial Debut With Superb Performances From Judy Greer and Alexander Skarsgard – Tribeca Film Festival

Premiering Saturday night in the Tribeca Film Festival’s Spotlight Narrative category, Eric Larue is an intense and devastating account of the after effects of a school shooting, but the focus is almost entirely on the parents of that boy who shot and killed three male classmates and is now in prison. Adapted by Brett Neveu from his own 2002 stage play, it has taken on new weight in the two decades since it was first presented at Chicago’s Red Orchid Theatre in light of the seemingly endless numbers of school shootings and the fact that the number one cause for deaths of young people is now by gun. But for his feature film directorial debut actor Michael Shannon was most interested in looking at the effects of this traumatic life-changing incident from the point of view of the parents, those of the kids killed, and particularly the pair of the young teen who murdered them.

‘Our Son’ Review: A Moving, Turbulent Gay Marriage Story With Heart And Humor – Tribeca Film Festival

“How do people do this?” asks well-to-do New York book publisher Nicky (Luke Evans) in a state of exasperation. Nicky is in the thick of a bitter custody battle for his eight-year-old son Owen (Christopher Woodley), after Gabriel (Billy Porter), his partner of 13 years, has decided to call time on their relationship. It’s a well-worn premise in mainstream cinema — essayed most recently by Noah Baumbach’s acerbic Marriage Story, and still portrayed most famously in Robert Benton’s 1979 weepie Kramer vs. Kramer — but gay cinema has been slow to tackle the issue. With his second movie, the follow-up to the 2018 sci-fi Jonathan, Bill Oliver corrects that oversight with a beautifully judged human drama that dissects a dying marriage with humor and intelligence, drawing out an especially open and moving performance from Porter.

Tom Holland’s ‘The Crowded Room’ Is Unfortunately Empty: TV Review

Alison Herman TV Critic Over 20 years ago, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman penned the script for “A Beautiful Mind,” the Oscar-winning biopic of mathematician and diagnosed schizophrenic John Nash. To convey Nash’s subjective experience of his condition, “A Beautiful Mind” pulled a bait-and-switch. Early in the film, we meet Nash’s college roommate, who becomes his lifelong friend; later, it’s revealed the roommate was a figment of Nash’s imagination. At the time, the twist was effective enough to earn Goldsman an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. The limited series “The Crowded Room,” created by Goldsman for Apple TV+, attempts the same trick to greatly diminished returns. A simple Wikipedia search shows that “The Crowded Room” was inspired by Billy Milligan, the first defendant acquitted by invoking a case of dissociative identity disorder in the late 1970s. But ahead of the show’s release, critics were asked not to disclose the fractured mental state of Danny Sullivan, the Milligan analog played with doe-eyed naiveté of Tom Holland. This puzzled me, given the eminently Googleable nature of the premise. Then I started watching.

With DGA Pact in Hand, Industry Focus Turns to SAG-AFTRA Agenda: Self-Taping, Streaming and AI

Gene Maddaus Senior Media Writer With a tentative Directors Guild of America deal in hand and the Writers Guild of America on strike, SAG-AFTRA has been thrust into a bigger role than the performer’s union has played in years in the industry’s triennial labor contract negotiations. SAG-AFTRA gets its turn at the bargaining table this week, with an agenda that seeks to address the many ways that technology is changing the profession of acting. Two of the union’s top concerns — streaming residuals and artificial intelligence — are also key issues for the WGA and DGA. The performers’ guild is also uniquely focused on putting limits on “self-taped” auditions, which have become ubiquitous since the beginning of the pandemic.

Hayley Williams Apologizes for ‘Shaming’ Unruly Fans at Paramore Show: ‘I Abused My Responsibility and My Platform’

Thania Garcia Paramore’s Hayley Williams has expressed regret and apologized for the way she removed two arguing concert-goers from one of the band’s recent shows in a pensive note uploaded to Discord. “I am sorry for whatever shame or embarrassment I may have caused you,” she wrote. Footage of the confrontation at the Madison Square Garden gig showed the spotlighted attendees at a loss for words when William told them they needed “to find somewhere else to take care of that shit because that’s not happening here tonight, this is our house.” Williams has routinely dedicated a portion of the band’s “This is Why” tour stops to encourage fans to be themselves in the safety and comfortability of their shows, and she wasted no time in making a similar statement at the band’s appearance in New York.
