blog post, wherein Blizzard revealed it would be “trying something new” by offering a selection of games on Steam going forward. To note: It has yet to detail what other titles are on the way or when they’re coming, as “Overwatch 2” is the only game confirmed thus far.
Prior to this move, one would need to operate exclusively through Battle.net to play Blizzard titles such as “Overwatch 2.” Now, although players will still need an underlying Battle.net account, they’ll be able to download Blizzard games through Steam, use their Steam friends list for game invites and accrue Steam achievements, among other features. The aforementioned utility and user-friendliness of Steam is why many PC gamers prefer to use it exclusively for gaming activities, with some people preferring it so much so that they outright snub games bound to other storefronts. For publishers and developers, this presents a dilemma: Occupy the most popular storefront and pay a cut of profits to Valve (the middleman behind Steam) or keep games exclusive to their publisher-specific storefront and risk losing out on attention and sales. This dilemma has troubled publishers for a long time.
Major gaming entities such as Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, and Blizzard’s own Activision Blizzard have all attempted to make their games exclusive to their own storefronts (Origin, Ubisoft Connect, and Battle.net, respectively) over the years. Yet each one eventually gave up and brought their games back to Steam, hence why you can find EA, Ubisoft and Activision titles on Valve’s storefront.

Baldur’s Gate 3 should not create a “raised standard” for other role-playing games, due to the upcoming game’s large scale.Xalavier Nelson Jr, accomplished independent developer and founder of Strange Scaffold, took to Twitter to explain that Baldur’s Gate 3 is an abnormal game. To exemplify this, Larian Studios began work on the new entry in the series in 2017, using seven different studios with over 400 developers, and benefitted from a significant volume of fan feedback in a three-year early access period.Like a lot of people, I'm deeply excited about what the lovely folks at Larian accomplished with Baldur's Gate 3, but I want to gently, pre-emptively push back against players taking that excitement and using it to apply criticism or a "raised standard" to RPGs going forward1/10— Xalavier Nelson Jr.

Frictional Games, famous for the Penumbra and Amnesia series, shared its intentions to tone down the horror elements in its future games. In an interview, creative director Thomas Grip explained that the emotional investment is the most important aspect of a game from Frictional Games, rather than the fear factor (via 80lv). “While all of our games have been horror in some way, what we really try to do is to get a kind of ‘playable immersion’,” he said.Referring to Amnesia: Rebirth‘s themes of motherhood and SOMA‘s philosophical questions on how we define a human being, Grip praised the team’s “holistic” efforts to balance both these complex subjects as well as an entertaining and terrifying experience.“We delivered these themes within a horror context, but those stories could be told in another genre,” continued the creative director.

Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor Microsoft and Activision Blizzard extended the deadline to close their $69 billion mega-deal by three months as the parties work to get approval from U.K. regulators. Microsoft and Activision Blizzard’s original merger agreement expired July 18, 2023. On Tuesday, the companies entered into an agreement waiving certain rights to terminate the merger if the transaction has not closed prior to Oct. 18, 2023. The agreement also includes amendments to Activision Blizzard’s commercial Xbox arrangements with Microsoft, valued at up to $250 million for each of fiscal years 2023 and 2024. The deal, announced in January 2022, has cleared most regulatory and legal challenges, including U.S. federal courts rejection of the FTC’s bid to block the deal and the Supreme Court’s rejection of a last-minute appeal to stop the deal by a group of gamers opposed to Microsoft’s takeover of Activision.
Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor The Supreme Court rejected an 11th-hour bid to stop Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, maker of popular games like Call of Duty, Candy Crush and World of Warcraft, knocking down what appears to be the last legal challenge standing in the way of the deal’s closing. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan on Tuesday turned down the request, filed by a group of gamers, for an emergency injunction to halt the merger. On Friday, the federal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals denied a request by the Federal Trade Commission to stop the merger, coming after a federal district court judge on July 11 rejected the FTC’s request to block Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Kagan, who reviews emergency applications to the Supreme Court from the Ninth Circuit, did not provide an explanation for her decision in rejecting the motion.
