Blackpool illuminations to cost almost £2m amid soaring energy prices

Lorne Michaels is gearing up for a transitional season of Saturday Night Live after a massive cast shakeup ahead of Season 48. The NBC sketch comedy series lost a total of 8 cast members and Michaels is talking about how that came about.

More trains will start to run between London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly from next Tuesday, under-fire train operator Avanti West Coast has announced. Between the stations, Avanti will run an additional 10 daily trains on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, and an extra six trains on Wednesdays.

Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Zentropa Entertainments has unveiled the full cast of Nikolaj Arcel’s new epic historical drama “The Bastard” (previously known as the working title “King’s Land”). Norwegian actress Kristine Kujath Thorp (“Ninjababy,” “Sick of Myself”) will play Frederik de Schinkel’s cousin Edel Helene, trapped in a deadly game between Shinkel and Kahlen of power and love. The cast also includes European Shooting Star winner Gustav Lindh (“Riders of Justice”) who will play pastor Anton Eklund, Kahlen’s unlikely ally.Other cast members include Jakob Lohmann (“Riders of Justice”), Morten Hee Andersen (“Ride Upon the Storm”), Magnus Krepper (“Queen of Hearts”) and Felix Kramer (“Dark”), among others. Believed to be Zentropa’s biggest feature films in years , the $8-million budget feature has already pre-sold to the U.S. (Magnolia Pictures), Germany (PLAION PICTURES), France (The Jokers Films), Benelux (September Films) and Hungary (Vertigo Media).

The cost of a pint would have to rise to “ridiculous” amounts to match the increase in running costs that landlords now face, according to a leading campaigner. Speaking to the Daily Star, Tom Stainer, the chief executive of the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) group, said thousands of pubs could be forced to close because it is not “viable” for landlords to raise the cost of a pint to £15 or 20 to cover their soaring energy bills.

Thousand of people watched as Blackpool illuminations were switched on tonight. Designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen pulled the lever following a star-studded party at Blackpool Tower Ballroom, switching on the famous lights along the promenade and prompting a huge fireworks display.
