‘BlackBerry’ Review: Matt Johnson’s Chronicling Of The Rise & Downfall Of The BlackBerry Is A Boisterous Ode To The Underdog [Berlin]

With the Academy Awards this weekend, one can’t help but think about last year’s ceremony. And last year’s Oscars will forever live in infamy, thanks to Will Smith getting onstage and slapping Chris Rock in the face for making a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Mk2 films has enlisted leading distributors around the world for “Reality,” Tina Satter’s feature debut starring Sydney Sweeney, on the heels of its buzzy world premiere at the Berlinale. The movie, which bowed in the Panorama section, stars Sweeney (“White Lotus,” “Euphoria”) as Reality Winner, a 25 year-old whistleblower who spent five years in prison during the Trump administration. A former U.S. Air Force member and National Security Agency translator, Winner was convicted for leaking a confidential report on Russian election interference to the media. The film is based on Satter’s 2019 stage play “Is This a Room” and contains verbatim dialogue from the unedited transcript of a FBI audio recording. “Reality” captures the tense and surreal 90 minutes of FBI’s interrogation with Winner at her home in 2017.

Netflix has edited out a mistake made by Chris Rock in his comedy special Chris Rock: Selective Outrage.In the special, the comedian addresses the moment at last year’s Oscars where Will Smith slapped him in the face onstage.At one point, Rock claims Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith were upset with him beforehand when he hosted the Oscars back in 2016.“Years ago his wife said I should quit the Oscars, I shouldn’t host ‘cause her man didn’t get nominated for Emancipation, the biggest piece of shit, ever,” Rock told the crowd in Baltimore, Maryland (via Decider).After naming the wrong movie, Rock quickly corrected himself, adding: “No, not Emancipation, I fucked up the joke. She started this shit. She said that me, a fucking grown ass man, should quit his job because ‘My husband didn’t get nominated for Concussion’.”The correction was pointed out by Vulture’s Jesse David Fox on Twitter, who wrote: “They fixed the Concussion–Emancipation slip up in the version that’s now on Netflix.”He added: “It makes me wonder if there has been other tweaks!”Speaking about the Oscars slap, Rock said: “Everybody knows it happened.

Damon is a producer on the documentary which chronicles the struggle of Sarajevo citizens during the Bosnian War. World premiering in the Berlinale Special section, the politically minded documentary is directed by Nenad Cicin-Sain and based on “Fools Rush in: A Memoir” the memoir of Bill Carter, an aid worker. It shows how his determination resulted in the enlistment of the world’s largest rock band, U2, to help shine a light. Fifth Season and WME handling worldwide sales. Asked if he was considering following the footsteps of Sean Penn with “Superpower” with a film on the war in Ukraine, he said he’s “watched as everyone has with horror that unfolded there in the last year,” and although they “don’t have anything on it right now there isn’t any doubt that we’ll be doing.”

There is a particular kind of audacity reserved for the wealthy and the well-meaning. Multi-award-winning actor and humanitarian Sean Penn co-directs “Superpower” with Aaron Kaufman, known mostly for his commercial work and his collaboration with writer-director Robert Rodriguez.

Few, however, are as invested in the charged immediacy of art’s relationship to real-life pain as “Kiss the Future,” a documentary enjoying its world premiere Feb. 19 in the Berlinale Special slot, with Fifth Season and WME handling worldwide sales. Directed by Nenad Cicin-Sain, and based on American-born aid worker Bill Carter’s “Fools Rush in: A Memoir” (the pair share a screen story credit), the film is a savvy mélange of history and cultural portraiture that affectingly chronicles the struggle of Sarajevo’s besieged civilians during the Bosnian War of the 1990s.

Who knew a Canadian biopic of an infamous smartphone could be this entertaining, even poignant and moving? I am here to tell you today’s World Premiere Berlin Film Festival competition entry, BlackBerry is all that and more.
