You’ve probably heard by now about how this year marks the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. It’s a theme last night’s BET awards embraced with gusto, featuring performances from generational icons alongside the hottest up-and-comers of the moment.

Tina Turner’s legacy was honored last night at the BET Awards with a special tribute sung by Patti LaBelle. The 79-year-old sang her heart out to Turner’s iconic “The Best.” A clip of the video has gone viral on social media where the singer couldn’t read the teleprompter and fumbled on the lyrics, but LaBelle handled it like a pro.LaBelle had a standing ovation after the performance. “I can’t see the words, and I don’t know.

Jem Aswad Executive Editor, Music Three hours and 52 minutes is a long time to be doing anything except sleeping — driving, cooking, painting a room — and it’s an excruciatingly long time to spend watching an awards show. But unlike those other activities, spending 3:52 watching a televised awards show (and that total doesn’t even include the hour-long red-carpet pre-show) leaves a person with little sense of accomplishment or rejuvenation. The BET Awards are always unusually long for an awards show that isn’t an Oscars or a Grammys — the network traditionally blocks out three-and-a-half hours on the last Sunday night in June — and most years it delivers with either a stacked talent lineup and/or a series of water-cooler moments. But whether due to the ongoing writers’ strike — which got at least two statements of support from people on the BET stage — or the fact that many artists, including Sunday’s big winners, SZA and Beyonce, are on the road, making up for touring time lost to the pandemic, there was little of either in evidence on Sunday night, in a show that, without naming names, was dominated by mediocre talent, over-long speeches or paid programming of some kind. It’s a safe bet that even the biggest fans of hip-hop and R&B had no idea who was on stage for a large percentage of the time. (The full winners list appears below.)

I'm tryin', y'all!»At one point, LaBelle asked, «Where are my background singers,» referencing her infamous performance of «This Christmas» at the 1996 National Tree Lighting Ceremony, where the «Lady Marmalade» singer's cue cards were out of order.Still, LaBelle powered through her stumbles and got back in sync with her background singers as the audience sang and danced along and ended the tribute to a standing ovation. «God bless you, Tina Turner,» she exclaimed on stage.LaBelle spoke with ET's Kevin Frazier backstage after her performance and opened up about why it was so important for her to honor Turner at the event and what it meant to her.«It meant no matter what voice I'm in — I'm hoarse, I have a cold — but whatever, I had to, I was giving it up for Tina Turner, 'cause she's simply the best,» LaBelle said, as she got a bit emotional thinking about the late icon.

Migos‘ Quavo and Offset performed together for first time since bandmate Takeoff‘s death at last night’s (June 25) 2023 BET Awards.Takeoff (real name Kirsnick Khari Ball) was killed on November 1, 2022 in what Houston police said was a “lucrative” game of dice outside a bowling alley at around 2.30am. The police have said that the rapper was not involved and was “an innocent bystander”.
