Below Deck Mediterranean star Kyle Viljoen has opened up about a "painful and traumatic bodily experience" that saw him hospitalised in recent days.
The TV star, 31, took to Instagram to share some hospital photos as he revealed he had been diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson syndrome after reacting badly to some new medication. In a lengthy caption detailing the terrifying experience, he wrote: "Late Sunday night was the start to a scary ride for Zachary and I.
After starting a new medication I begin to feel generally unwell. "Little did I know the battle I was going to face was the most painful and traumatic bodily experience of my life." Discussing his symptoms, Kyle revealed that he had a "throat pain like none other" which then spread to his mouth, lips, hands and feet.
He then visited a walk-in clinic where they told him he had hand-food-mouth disease and sent him back home. A few days later, his fiancé Zachary Riley rushed him to the ER as his symptoms began to worsen, leaving him unable to swallow.
After being seen by "every service from ophthalmology to dermatology", Kyle was told he had Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, which the NHS website describes as a "rare but serious skin reaction" that's usually caused by taking certain medications." Opening up about his diagnosis, Kyle penned: " Stevens-Johnson Syndrome is a rare, serious disorder of the skin and mucous membranes.
Treated as a medical emergency requiring hospitalization. "Usually a reaction to certain medications that starts with flu-like symptoms, followed by a painful rash that spreads with bursting and oozing blisters.
Then the top layer of affected skin dies & sheds.
Treated with intensive IVIG transfusions and medical treatment." Sharing that he was recovering
