Backlash as bosses plough ahead with plans to create University of Greater Manchester

Leaders at the University of Bolton are pressing ahead with controversial plans to remove the town from its name. The organisation’s Office for Students (OfS) has launched a consultation on a proposal to change its name to the University of Greater Manchester.
The University of Manchester say they will object to the plans, which they describe as 'very misleading and confusing'. The move is opposed by Bolton Council with leader Nick Peel recently saying keeping Bolton in the title is ‘non-negotiable’ and that other political party leaders agreed with him.
He suggested a ‘win-win’ solution with the university having both ‘Bolton’ and Greater Manchester’ in its title. Since the consultation on the name change was published, the university’s Facebook page has received comments opposing the move.
Michelle Bamford said: “I’m proud to be University of Bolton alumni. I won’t be telling people I attended the University of Greater Manchester. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” Another visiting professor to the university said: “I want it to stay with that name.
"The university is one of the positive features of Bolton and helps reinforce town pride, despite the hard knocks it has had in recent years.”
Professor George Holmes has been vice chancellor of the University of Bolton for almost two decades. He said: “The new title will more accurately portray what the university has become in recent years; serving and operating in the whole area of Greater Manchester, not just one borough within it. “Our commitment to Bolton is unswerving and we are committed to continue to be part of the fabric of the local community.
