‘Asteroid City,’ ‘Poor Things’ & ‘The Gilded Age’ Among 2024 ADG Awards Nominations

The Oscar nominations may have been revealed, but thre are still guild award nominations to announce. This morning, the American CInema Editors revealed the nominees for the 74th Annual Eddie Awards celebrating the best in film and television editing.

American Cinemas Editors has cut together the nominees for its 74rd annual ACE Eddie Awards, which will be handed out next month. See the list of all 13 film and TV categories below.

Thomas Cailley’s fantasy drama The Animal Kingdom topped the nominations for France’s César Awards, which were announced in Paris on Wednesday.

Jordan Moreau The countdown to the 2024 Oscars has officially started. All of the nominations for the 96th annual Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning.

Jon Burlingame Two songs from “Barbie” have been nominated as best song, part of a diverse collection of songs and scores nominated for the 96th annual Academy Awards. “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, and “I’m Just Ken,” by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, were chosen by the 390 voting members of the Academy music branch.

Awards Season finally has some twists and turns to contend with before the Oscar nominations are revealed on Tuesday. Today, the 2024 BATA Awards nominations were revealed and snubs and surprises were almost everywhere.

Oppenheimer leading the way with no less than 13 nominations, including best film. Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things is a close second with 11 nods, and then Killers of the Flower Moon and The Zone of Interest which both bagged 9.

Ellise Shafer “Small Things Like These,” a historical drama starring Cillian Murphy, is set to open this year’s Berlin Film Festival. Directed by Tim Mielants from a script by Enda Walsh, the film will have its world premiere in the festival’s competition on Feb. 15.

Nominations for the EE British Academy Film Awards will be unveiled Thursday in London via a livestream that begins at 12 pm GMT/4 AM PST.

The BAFTA nominations are in less than 24 hours and the Oscar nominations are in less than a week, but there are still other adjacent awards season nominations to unveil. This morning, The USC Libraries revealed the honorees for the 2024 USC Scripter Awards rewarding the best in adapted screenplays for television and film.

Jon Burlingame Sometimes directors don’t want you humming the music as you leave their film. More than ever, filmmakers are seeking fresh musical approaches, especially when the subject matter is dark or fantastic. Three late-2023 releases demonstrate this with music that catches the ear in unusual ways.

First came SAG, then came the DGA, and now, the Producers Guild of America has revealed their year-end honors. The nominees for the 35th annual PGA Awards featured many familiar titles across film and television.

The Directors Guild of America unveiled their final nominees for the 76th DGA Awards and there were few surprises. Making the cut were Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”), Greta Gerwig (“Barbie”), Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Alexander Payne (“The Holdovers”).

The American Society of Cinematographers revealed the nominees for the 2024 ASC Awards, a precursor to the Oscar for Cinematography, and the results were somewhat as expected. Emphasis on “somewhat.” In the Theatrical Feature Film category, Matthew Libatique (“Maestro”), Robbie Ryan (“Poor Things”), Hoyte van Hoytema (“Oppeneheimer”), and Rodrigo Prieto (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) all earned nominations.

As awards season switches up a gear, with the handing out of the Golden Globes and the publication of the Bafta shortlists, one major title stands out in the International categories of both: Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winning courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall. It would be a reasonable bet for the Oscar win in any year — if it were actually eligible. In lieu of Triet’s film, which fell well within Academy rules in terms of the amount of English spoken, the French selection panel opted instead for period gourmet drama The Taste of Things to do battle for the country’s honor, a move that is sure to cause a lot of confusion in the coming weeks.

It was only a matter of time before Willem Dafoe worked with Yorgos Lanthimos, and the result is everything you might expect and more. In Poor Things, the actor plays Dr. Godwin Baxter, a Scottish scientist given to sewing dog’s heads onto chickens, and we meet him after completing the most important experiment of his life: by transplanting an infant’s brain into the skull of its dead mother, he creates the anarchic and wholly unpredictable Bella (Emma Stone). It may sound creepy, most likely because it really is, but Dafoe brings a surprising sadness to the role. Here, he reflects on the film’s strange, unique world, raises the curtain on 2024, and talks a little about his recent festival hit Inside, in which he plays a clueless thief who becomes trapped in the apartment of a wealthy art collector.
