EXCLUSIVE: Actors Iko Uwais, Beulah Koale, and Kate Elliott have signed on to star in Ash, the sophomore feature from producer, rapper, and filmmaker Flying Lotus (Kuso).
The trio round out the cast alongside Flying Lotus, who will now also act in the pic alongside serving as director. As Deadline previously revealed, Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) lead the project, which comes from an original screenplay written by Jonni Remmler.
Production on the pic began this week in New Zealand, with Nate Boloton of XYZ Films and Matthew Metcalfe of GFC Films producing. Neill Blomkamp (District 9) and Echo Lake are onboard as exec producers. XYZ Films is co-financing alongside IPR.VC. Flying Lotus is also set to compose an original score for the film.
Plot follows a woman (González) who wakes up on a distant planet and finds the crew of her space station viciously killed. She must now decide if she can trust the man (Paul) sent to rescue her.
Ash is the latest collaboration between XYZ and GFC, following 2014’s The Dead Lands from director Toa Fraser and his next feature, 6 Days, starring Jamie Bell, Mark Strong, and Abbie Cornish.
Uwais starred in the XYZ film series The Raid. He can also be seen in Stuber, Snake Eues, Mile 22, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Koale is best known for his role in Hawaii Five-O and is also known for the war drama Thank You for Your Service. Elliott is best known for her roles in the shows The Gulf and Wentworth.

Sources tell Variety that the film has sold into STXInternational for the U.K. and to Sony Pictures for most other overseas markets. FilmNation has sold remaining international markets to independent international distributors. In the U.K., Variety understands that Prime Video is in the process of buying the film from STX. This could mean that STX is handling a theatrical release, while Prime Video takes the film for streaming, or that the streamer will also handle theatrical in the territory. Sources indicate that Prime Video is also picking up streaming rights in a number of other international markets.

Randall Emmett is speaking out against an upcoming documentary about the controversies and allegations made against him last year in a expose.Emmett released a statement to on Tuesday, defending himself against the Hulu project, titled, , while also slamming his ex, Lala Kent.«Almost one year ago the wrote a highly biased and factually inaccurate hit piece on me,» Emmett claimed in his statement, before going on to claim that the journalist who wrote the article «seemed to have a personal vendetta against me, I believe due to her alleged friendship with my ex Lala Kent.»He claims the article featured «fictitious and greatly exaggerated stories» shared by people he claimed were «disgruntled employees who had been dismissed.»Kent was among several women who shared allegations of inappropriate and abusive behavior in the article, published last June. Kent, however, is not a part of the forthcoming documentary, and neither is Emmett.«I declined to participate because it very quickly became apparent to me the film was going to be as biased, if not more so, than the article on which it was based,» he claimed in his statement.
