Asda is set to open a brand new store in the city centre — but it’ll be unlike its other Mancunian shops.
The supermarket chain is applying to open an Asda Express on Oxford Road. Should planning permission be granted, the smaller version of the supermarket will open inside the Circle Square development.
Asda’s arrival at the development will break an established pattern of openings on the site, which currently is home to craft beer bars, a bao bun restaurant, and trendy brunch spots. However, new planning documents reveal the Leeds-headquartered chain is in talks to open in Circle Square.

“We have been instructed by Asda Stores Limited to seeks permission in writing of the proposed opening hours of Asda Express, [at] Retail Unit T4, Circle Square, Oxford Road,” a letter from planning agents Pegasus Group said.
It goes on to explain that the application is being sought because of conditions in the original planning approval for the huge project, which was given the green light in 2017. Those conditions required any new operators to apply for permission over their opening hours.
In Asda’s case, those hours will be from 6am to midnight every day. Residents can have their say on the proposed hours online, until August 31.
A spokesperson for Asda confirmed an application had been submitted, but declined to comment further.
You can see the application here, or by searching ‘CDN/23/0534’ on the council’s planning portal.
