The writers strike ended seven months ago, but memories of the picket lines were fresh at the WGA Awards tonight.
“The Strike is over, the fight goes on,” said former WGAW President David Goodman tonight at the Hollywood Palladium. “As individuals we’re replaceable, but as a union we’re irreplaceable,” emphasized Goodman to cheers.
As the guild gave out awards to scribes, speaker after speaker brought up the 148-day long WGA Strike as well as the SAG-AFTRA strike repeatedly.
From WGAW President Meredith Stiehm to Hollywood Teamster Chief Lindsay Dougherty to Goodman and fellow Morgan Cox honoree Chris Keyser and even Drew Carey, the strike was a constant topic.
Even AMPTP President Carol Lombardini made an appearance to talk strike (kind of). A photo Lombardini appeared on screen with a mouth piece full of sarcasm and mocking remarks about the studios’ and their stance during last year’s hot labor summer. Or as WGAW Chief Siehm remarked over and over, “Writers were not alone with support from other guilds and allies.” Remarks that brought upon one of many standing ovations for last year’s labor actions and potential labor actions this year for IATSE, the Teamsters and other crafts as they negotiate with the studios right now.

“Shout out to all you writers who used your picket signs as writing samples,” exclaimed WGA host Nicey Nash Betts at the top of the ceremony.

Brent Simon For the roughly 12,000 scribes the Writers Guild of America represents, the last year has been an emotional roller coaster: The guild engaged in a labor stoppage for over four and a half months in 2023 that, alongside a partially overlapping SAG-AFTRA strike, ground production to a halt. But with a new contract now in hand, the upcoming Writers Guild Awards afford union members the chance for a collective exhalation.
They’re baaack. We retired Strike Talk, the Deadline podcast by Billy Ray and Todd Garner Deadline hatched to lend perspective and serve as a beacon of hope to the industry during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. We’ve put the band back together because a potential standoff between the signatories and the negotiators for the Teamster and IATSE guilds looms just up the road when their contracts expire July 31. Are the signatories going to repeat last year’s failed strategy of keeping the CEOs out of the room until too late to stop another disastrous Hollywood shut down? Ray and Garner pose that question to Lindsay Dougherty, who’s leading the negotiation for the Teamsters, and who here reveals she has not had even a passing chat with any of the CEOs that finally solved the last round of labor strife. Dougherty figured into the last strike when she pledged the commitment of Teamsters to stand in solidarity with the striking guilds, which put pressure on the AMPTP to get serious. Here, she discusses the production downturn that followed the return to production, the resolve that these guilds have to get a proper deal and her hope that the signatories don’t once again “trip over dollars to save pennies.” Buckle up.
