Ariana Grande is opening up about what inspired her to release her seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine, which is set to drop on March 8.
In a new interview, Grande said she was not planning on releasing new music until after Wicked opened in theaters.
“I did not plan to [make new music now]. I didn’t have the goal to make an album,” Grande said on the Zach Sang Show. “I actually was really opposed to coming out with music until after Wicked, either both parts or just one part. I wasn’t sure how I would feel.”
However, when Hollywood was shut down following the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, filming for Wicked was put on pause, leaving Grande with extra time. The “Yes, and?” singer teamed up with Max Martin in New York City and created new music.
“It all just kind of started pouring out, and after our first week together, I kept coming to the studio every day by myself, and it just kinda kept organically happening that way, so I just decided to react and listen to that, and I thought maybe it should come out if it’s coming out of me this way,” she said. “Maybe it should be shared this way.”
Eternal Sunshine is her first album since Positions dropped back in October 2020. Grande said she has evolved since the release of her last album, particularly since being part of Wicked and giving life to Glinda.
“I kind of healed a lot of parts of myself alongside and through [Glinda], and it actually helped me heal a lot of my own personal weird stuff that I had with my relationship to music and to being an artist,” she said. “It all happened absolutely how it was meant to be.”
Wicked: Part One opens in theaters on November 27, 2024, with the second part dropping the year after.

The 96th Academy Awards ceremony was so locked in and nearly pre-determined that we, and many other outlets like ours, didn’t bother with an annual Snubs and Surprises feature—90% of the winners were that expected. But the Oscars always manage to throw in at least one curveball, and that was the Best Actress race.
Despite not winning the best lead actress category at the 2024 Oscars Sunday, Lily Gladstone says she is “feeling the love big time” following the ceremony. Gladstone was neck-and-neck throughout awards season for the honor in a race that was too close to call with Emma Stone, who eventually won the statuette for her amazing performance in Poor Things, and many expressed disappointment over her loss.

Alejandro Monteverde, whose Sound Of Freedom was the top grossing independent film of 2023, is back in theaters this weekend with Cabrini, also from Angel Studios, in wide release. The true story of an indomitable Italian nun on a mission to aid immigrants living in misery and poverty in late 19th century New York City, stars Cristiana Dell’Anna as waif-like Francesca Cabrini. She navigates a Pope, an Archbishop, the mayor of New York and the Italian Senate among others to build a charitable empire starting with one orphanage in the immigrant slum called Five Points (last seen in Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York). Giancarlo Giannini plays Pope Leo; David Morse is Archbishop Michael Augustine Corrigan; and John Lithgow a villainous Mayor Gould — men Cabrini lectured, sparred with, cajoled and threatened to realize her life’s work. Jaden Thompson Indigenous stories aren’t always told with the care, nuance and authenticity they deserve in Hollywood, and, more often than not, their stories aren’t told at all. While “Killers of the Flower Moon” has certainly prompted discourse within indigenous communities about who should tell what stories, the Osage Nation Congress has unanimously endorsed the creative contributions that Lily Gladstone and Scott George made to the film. The tribal governing body recently passed bills expressing support for their roles in Martin Scorsese’s historical epic.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Natalie Portman revealed on a recent episode of the “Smartless” podcast (via People) that Jodie Foster once reached out to her after she heard Portman giving a speech about being sexualized as a young actor. Portman, meanwhile, was 11 years old when she was cast in “Léon: The Professional,” which served as her own acting breakthrough.
Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Just 30 minutes after final voting for the Screen Actors Guild Awards wrapped up, I made a last-minute switch in my best actress prediction — from Lily Gladstone in “Killers of the Flower Moon” to Emma Stone in “Poor Things.” Let this be a lesson: Second-guessing yourself is seldom a good idea.
