Angelina Jolie Explains Why the Greece Migrant Boat Disaster Happened

Angelina Jolie took to social media to comment on the Greece migrant boat disaster as the search continues for survivors in southern Greece.
The fishing boat may have been carrying as many as 750 people, of which around 100 were children. At least 78 people have died.
The 48-year-old actress and humanitarian said, “Sickened by this news. No one risks their life in this way unless they are without options.”

Angelina then shared the story of a man she knew in a similar situation.
“I knew a man who lost his wife and daughter after holding on to their bodies for hours trying to keep them alive. I asked why they would get on such a crowded boat if it looked dangerous? And why risk it in the first place?” the Maleficent actress shared in her Instagram Stories.
While in a warzone trying to help as a doctor, his wife desperately urged him to get on a boat. When another boat rammed into them, they tragically lost their lives because he was “unable to keep them afloat.”
Angelina offered the story to explain that, “He is not a bad person or a bad parent. He had no options.”
“One of the myths is that this comes from a desire for a better life. That undermines the very real horrors people are living daily. And what this route represents as a last desperate attempt to keep your family safe,” Angelina said.
“The focus should be why, in the first place, refugees and other people on the move are unable to be home and what would be done to stabilize, and make trade and relations more stable so they can live and thrive at home,” Angelina said, trying to get to the issue’s root cause.
