Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes are speaking out for the first time since their suspension and eventual exit from their co-anchor spots on ABC’s GMA3 a year ago after news of their extramarital relationship went public.
“I guess the best way to sum us up, Amy and T.J., is that we’re the folks who lost the jobs we love because we love each other,” Holmes said on the couple’s new iHeartMedia podcast Amy & T.J. today. “And that is the bottom line.”
Last December, Robach and Holmes were taken off the Good Morning America spin-off by ABC after the Daily Mail published a story about the couple’s romantic relationship. The two were married to other people at the time – Robach to actor Andrew Shuh, and Holmes to lawyer Marilee Fiebig – and eventually ABC made the suspension permanent.
In today’s podcast, Robach and Holmes say they were both going through divorces at the time and planned to tell ABC execs about their relationship once their respective divorces were finalized.
For the first time since their firing, the podcasters detail their “hell of a year” that began with phone calls from their higher-ups.
Says Robach, “We each got a phone call from our bosses saying that they had made the decision, and they made it again a point to say we hadn’t violated any company policy, but because we had become a distraction that they thought it would be best if they temporarily took us off the air to let things quiet down. And I remember I said, ‘Now this is going to be a story if you take us off the air, please don’t do this.’”
Adds Holmes, “That was the morning we knew we would not be going back to that network. We knew that phone call sealed it, because you can’t come back from that.”
