Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Amazon Studios’ head of international originals, James Farrell, who started overseeing Europe six months ago, said at Series Mania Festival that the service isn’t pulling out of local content but is keeping an eye on costs. Farrell, who previously worked at Amazon Studios in Japan where he backed the creation of the original format behind “LOL” in 2016, said Amazon “won’t cut down on the number of shows or films” they’re doing, but “want to continue to be really good corporate stewards.” “The world is having a tough time. There’s wars, you know, political situations are tough. That means, you know, you got to be thoughtful about what you spend,” said Farrell.
“If you can make this great movie with 20 locations instead of 30 to save a little bit of money, let’s do that. If we can reduce the episodes on the scripted show from eight to six and tell the story we wanted to tell, save some money, let’s do that. Let’s be let’s be responsible, let’s be thoughtful,” continued the L.A.-based executive.
Farrell said the real changes he’s looking to make are “around the kinds of content (Amazon Studios) make.” “People want to laugh more, they want to see the romance more, want to see action more. So I do try to direct people in that direction,” he said, giving the example of “Citadel,” Russo Brothers’ action-packed spy thriller which he described as a mix of “Mission Impossible” and “James Bond.” The executive is also looking to find a middle ground when it comes to budgets for local fare, and mentioned a $1 million budget per episode — substantially higher than average broadcasters’ budgets. Selome Hailu Lizzo’s looking to add to her posse again. The “About Damn Time” singer has opened a casting call for new Big Grrrls, her name for the plus-sized performers who back her up during live performances. In Season 1, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video in March 2022, Lizzo led a group of women through a boot camp in order to select 10 backup dancers for her currently ongoing Special World Tour. The series went on to pick up three Emmys for outstanding competition program, reality directing and reality editing. Though Amazon has not officially greenlit Season 2, a second installation would follow Lizzo as she seeks out contestants who excel in both dancing and singing.

Makeready’s Brad Weston is producing the film, with Jo Nesbø (bestselling Harry Hole book series), Niclas Salomonsson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Karnowski, and Makeready’s Collin Creighton executive producing. Makeready’s Oscar Montemayor will associate produce.

She is set to chair a skills task force for the U.K. screen industry with the intention of focusing on critical labor shortages in the production sector. Joining her on the task force will be senior representatives from major U.K. broadcasters BBC, ITV and Channel 4 as well as international studios and streamers including Prime Video, Netflix, Disney and NBCUniversal, key orgs such as ScreenSkills, PACT and the British Film Commission and national screen agencies. The British Film Institute (BFI) have convened the task force following a skills review commissioned by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport showing crew shortfalls will soon reach breaking point. Its remit is to produce and support a plan of action that will result in growth, training and increased retention in the screen sector as well as improvements in equity, diversity and inclusion and mental health. Where appropriate, the task force will make recommendations to the U.K. government.

The series, which consists of five one-hour episodes, premieres May 1 on Freevee. Lauren Swickard (“A California Christmas”) and Ali Afshar created “Casa Grande,” which comes from Afshar’s ESX Entertainment shingle.
